The nine-goal demolition by the Foxes against Southampton reminds us of some of the biggest victories in the English top-flight.

The late Friday-night Premier League fixture saw Leicester City run rampant over Southampton after demolishing them by a deficit of nine goals. The scoreboard read 0-9, something which not a lot of home fans remained in the stadium to read.

This feat was more iconic for the travelling Foxes as it was this weekend a year ago when they lost their former chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha to a horrid helicopter crash.

The resounding victory at the St. Mary takes its place in the history books as it equals the biggest victory in the league by a margin of nine goals, previously set by Manchester United’s nine-goal thumping of Ipswich in 1994-95.

It is also the biggest away win in the Premier League era eclipsing the previous record set by Manchester United after the Red Devils had humiliated Nottingham Forest by 8-1.

Let's look at the five biggest Premier League wins.

5. CHELSEA 8 - 0 ASTON VILLA (2012-13)

This fixture saw a record being made which still stands today. It was the first-time when seven different players of the same time scored in the league. Fernando Torres opened the scoring in the third minute, following which, David Luiz, Branislav Ivanovic, Frank Lampard, Ramires, Oscar and Eden Hazard also scored.

Biggest Premier League Wins: The game saw eight different scorers

Prior to Ramires’ second and Chelsea’s eighth goal on the day, Lucas Piazon had his penalty saved as well. This was also Rafa Benitez’s biggest victory in English football. It is also Aston Villa’s biggest-ever defeat in the league.

4. SOUTHAMPTON 8 - 0 SUNDERLAND (2014-15)

Before being on the receiving end of nine goals, Southampton have had the experience of dishing out an equally humiliating defeat when they triumphed against Sunderland in an eight-goal rout.

Biggest Premier League Wins: Sunderland saw three own goals out of the eight goals they conceded

Sunderland did not help their case either, as they gifted three own-goals to the opposition courtesy of Vergini, Bridcutt and Van Aanholt. This was back in 2014-15. A period when the Saints established themselves as a cult side which was reaching its peak as they finished seventh, sixth and eighth in the next three campaigns.

3. TOTTENHAM 9 - 1 WIGAN (2009-10)

Jermain Defoe scored five goals on a night when Wigan decided to throw caution to the wind after conceding eight goals in the second-half alone. Also adding their names on the scoresheet were Crouch, Lennon, Bentley and Kranjcar.

Interestingly, Wigan lost by a margin of eight goals once more in the last fixture of the season against Chelsea and yet avoided relegation with a six-point gap and goal difference of -42. As for Tottenham Hotspur, they finished fourth and qualified for European football for the first time since 1962.

2. MANCHESTER UNITED 9 - 0 IPSWICH (1994-95)

Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United were a juggernaut in the early days of the Premier League era and their 9-0 demolition of Ipswich was perfect revenge against a side which defeated them 3-2 in the reverse fixture.

1. SOUTHAMPTON 0 - 9 LEICESTER CITY (2019-20)

Southampton’s decimation started quite early as they went down to 10-men after Ryan Bertrand was sent-off with the help of VAR, right after Ben Chilwell opened the scoring in the 10th minute. The Foxes shot to a five-goal lead in the first half and scored another four after the break.

Two hat tricks from Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez, along with goals from Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielemans, and James Maddison secured a record-breaking biggest away victory in the Premier League.

SPECIAL MENTION

There was a common factor in both the nine-goal victories from Manchester United and Leicester City. The father-son duo of Peter Schmeichel and Kasper Schmeichel were both involved and kept clean-sheets.
