Ronaldo, Salah lead KN's 2021-22 Premier League Team of the Season
The past campaign saw incredible individual performances by the players.
The Premier League 2021-22 season was exciting, memorable and very competitive. It took the final game week to decide the winner of the league, the final UEFA Champions League qualification place and the relegation battle. The English first division is hugely popular across the globe for its competitiveness and star power at the display.
The financial strength of the clubs allows them to buy top of the line talent which thereby results in sensational individual performances. Across the 2021-22 campaign as well, fans were witness to world-class players delivering outstanding performances for their respective teams.
Two clubs, in particular, Manchester City and Liverpool FC were miles better than the rest of the clubs. There were plenty of players from the two aforementioned outfits that achieved remarkable feats. Looking back at the highly entertaining season, here is Khel Now’s Premier League 2021-22 Team of the Season (TOTS):
GK - Ederson
Manchester City’s star goalkeeper Ederson was the pick of the bunch when it comes to custodians in the Premier League. The Brazilian is popular for being exceptional with the ball on his feet and keeping his performance at a high level constantly. He recorded 20 clean sheets, at par with LFC’s Alisson.
RB - Trent Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool FC’s Trent Alexander-Arnold was brilliant at the right-back position. The English international made 12 assists from 32 appearances, second only to his teammate Mohamed Salah. He also scored two goals to add to his goal contributions and takes his place in the TOTS. He also created 18 big chances, the second-best in the division.
CB - Antonio Rudiger
Antonio Rudiger’s final season in the Premier League before he leaves Chelsea was a positive one. The centre-back was a consistent performer for the Blues at the back. He also contributed with three goals and two assists including a powerful long-range strike against Brentford at Stamford Bridge.
CB - Virgil Van Dijk
Virgil Van Dijk was yet again sensational for Liverpool FC. The centre-back featured in 21 games where the Reds did not concede a single goal, thereby recording 21 clean sheets, most for any defender in the league. Furthermore, he scored three goals and provided four assists in 34 appearances.
LB - Joao Cancelo
Joao Cancelo was levels above any other left-back in the Premier League last season. Apart from helping Manchester City win the league, the defender provided seven assists and scored one goal too. The 27-year-old showed good longevity after featuring in 36 of 38 matches for the Cityzens. He was also the ninth-best player in terms of 56 completed dribbles.
CDM - Rodri
Manchester City had a rock in the midfield, namely Rodri. The Spaniard was exceptional for the outfit and kept the opposition midfielders silent. Furthermore, he scored seven goals, most of them eye-catching as well in addition to providing two assists in 37 matches. He also made 2629 passes, second only to Laporte in the league.
CM - Thiago
Yet another player to make the team of the season from Liverpool is Thiago. The midfielder was silky smooth in his gameplay and looked almost nonchalant in several fixtures. His technical brilliance was at full display wherein he made four assists and scored once. While his goal contributions from 25 appearances may be less, the key role he played cannot be undermined.
CM - Kevin De Bruyne
Kevin de Bruyne received the Player of the Season award by the league for the 2021-22 season. The Belgian international helped Manchester City win the league by scoring 15 goals and delivering eight assists. He truly delivered on all fronts, led the team brilliantly and created 16 big chances in the process, the third-best tally for a player.
LW - Son Heung-min
The 2021-22 season was incredible and most productive in terms of scoring goals for Son Heung-min. He became the first-ever Asian player to win the golden boot (shared with Salah) by scoring 23 goals in 35 matches. The South Korean international also made nine assists and all 23 of his goals came from open play.
RW - Mohamed Salah
Mohamed Salah could not succeed in helping Liverpool win the Premier League. However, he did win the golden boot (shared with Son) by scoring 23 goals in 35 matches. In addition, the winger also made 14 assists to help the Reds stay in the hunt of winning the league. Interestingly, Salah took 139 shots at goal, the most by any player.
ST - Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo’s epic return to Manchester United did not go according to plan as the club finished sixth with its lowest ever points total in the Premier League. However, the 37-year-old proved why he is still one of the best players in the world by scoring 18 goals in 30 matches. On his way to that mark, the Portuguese legend also scored two hattricks for the Red Devils.
