Belgium will meet New Zealand on June 27 IST.

The group stage in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is shaping up to be one of the tightest and most competitive group stages in the tournament’s history. Belgium will take on New Zealand, and Egypt will play Iran in the other pivotal clash.

Belgium, who opened their campaign with a draw against Egypt and Iran, are currently third in the group with two points. New Zealand are currently bottom with one point after they drew against Iran and lost to Egypt.

Both Egypt and Iran are on four points each heading into the final matchday, while both are still in contention for the remaining four spots thanks to the remaining matchdays.

What happens if Belgium beat New Zealand?

A victory would move Belgium onto five points. The Red Devils would qualify automatically for the Round of 32 if either Egypt or Iran win their match, as only one of those teams could finish above Belgium in that scenario.

If Egypt and Iran draw, all three teams would finish on five points, with the final positions to be decided by FIFA’s tiebreakers, including goal difference and goals scored.

A draw would take Belgium to three points.

Belgium would then need a winner in the Egypt vs Iran match to have any chance of qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams.

If Egypt and Iran also draw, both teams would move to five points, and Belgium would finish third in the group on three points, leaving qualification dependent on comparisons with third-placed teams from other groups.

What happens if Belgium lose to New Zealand?

A defeat would leave Belgium on two points.

In that scenario, Belgium would finish behind New Zealand and would be eliminated if either Egypt or Iran avoid defeat in the other Group G fixture.

Belgium’s only possible route to the Round of 32 after a loss would come if the Egypt vs Iran match produces a winner and Belgium’s points and goal difference remain sufficient to secure one of the best third-placed qualification spots, although their chances would be significantly reduced.

Can Belgium qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 by beating New Zealand?

Yes. A victory would take Belgium to five points and guarantee at least a top-three finish in Group G.

Why is the Belgium vs New Zealand match so important?

The result will determine whether Belgium progress to the Round of 32 or face the possibility of an early exit from the tournament.
