Cristiano Ronaldo has departed Portugal’s training facility on the eve of their UEFA Nations League match against Denmark, but the No.7 jersey will not be empty.
As UEFA confirmed, Rafael Leao, the attacker who transferred from AC Milan to Galatasaray in the summer, will wear it in this evening’s encounter at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium.
According to the Nations League regulations, players on the teamsheet are required to wear numbers 1–23. That is why Portugal had no other option but to award Rafael Leao the number seven shirt.

The change in numbers coincides with a poor relationship between Cristiano Ronaldo and manager Jorge Jesus. The Portuguese skipper allegedly did not enjoy spending almost 30 minutes warming up against Norway, without even playing, before leaving the pitch after full time. According to sources, the encounter may have resulted in his withdrawal from the camp.
The case is not expected to be settled soon. According to Marca, Ronaldo was assured of greater respect by the federation until 2027 to return to the national team. The Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, has requested a meeting with head coach Jorge Jesus to learn more about what happened.
Ronaldo stated that he will explain the reasons for his choice at a later date. Several media sites speculated that he could retire permanently from international football. However, no official declaration had been made at the time of publication.
