Barcelona have struck a deal with City to sign the midfielder.
Barcelona secured an agreement in principle with Manchester City to buy Rodri for a reported fee of €76.5 million.
The Spain international is scheduled to arrive in the Catalan city later today before having a medical at the club’s facilities tomorrow. The plan is to unveil Rodri in front of the Camp Nou after the Joan Gamper Trophy match versus Al Hilal.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Spanish midfielder will be given a very familiar shirt number at Barcelona, since the No. 16 jersey is now available. The player himself specifically requested the shirt number during contract negotiations with the club, and Barcelona have chosen to fulfil that wish.

Rodri is set to wear number 16 at Barcelona
The number being available couldn’t have come at a better moment, as Fermin takes up the No. 7 shirt left vacant by Ferran Torres’ departure.
For Rodri, the relevance is clear.
The Spanish midfielder has sported No. 16 during his Manchester City career, after choosing it when he joined from Atletico Madrid in 2019.
It is also the number linked with him on a worldwide scale. He wore No. 16 for Spain while hoisting the FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy just a month ago. So, with Barcelona’s decision to give him 16, the midfielder will not have to develop a new persona at his new club.
Fermin had previously worn the number at Barcelona, but he is likely to switch to No. 7, which is now vacant just after Ferran Torres left for Paris Saint-Germain. If the Spanish attacking midfielder had chosen to preserve that number, it would have been awkward to ask him to give it up for a new signing.
