Sadio Mane retires from international football after FIFA World Cup 2026 exit

The 34-year-old is the all-time top goalscorer for the Lions of Teranga.
Considered one of the best players from the African continent, Sadio Mane has now announced his retirement from the Senegal national football team. Although he will no longer wear the colours of the Lions of Teranga, he will continue to play club football.
His international career spanned more than a decade, marking one of the most influential journeys in the history of Senegal.
Sadio Mane first appeared for the under-23 side and made his senior debut in 2012. He went on to appear in 130 matches and scored 54 goals during his time with the national team. His performances for his country have been phenomenal. He also represented Senegal at the 2012 Olympics.
Mane also led Senegal to their first-ever major trophy in 2021 after their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph. Lions of Teranga also went on to win the 2025 edition of the tournament against Morocco, but were later stripped of the title by the Confederation of African Football.

Sadio Mane announces retirement

Sadio Mane’s decision to retire from international football was followed by the FIFA World Cup 2026 exit. Senegal lost 3-2 to Belgium in the round of 32. The 34-year-old forward failed to score a goal for his nation in the mega competition this year.
He plays for the Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr and will continue to be a part of the club for now. In the past, Mane has played for some of the top clubs like Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
