AS Roma predicted lineup for 2022-23 season
Jose Mourinho's side have signed a number of star players this summer.
A.S. Roma has loaded up their squad for next season with some serious reinforcements. Having signed big guns such as Paulo Dybala, Gini Wijnaldum and Nemanja Matic, Jose Mourinho's team looks really dangerous. The city of Rome looks vibrant after so many years with big expectations for next season. The fans expect much more from Jose Mourinho after his team’s performance last year.
After finishing sixth and winning the UEFA Conference League last season, Roma will aim for a bigger prize this season. With the arrival of stars like Dybala, Wijnaldum and Matic, there will be some changes in the starting lineup as well. Today we are going to take a look at the possible lineup of AS Roma for the next season.
Goalkeeper- Rui Patricio
Rui Patricio was signed by Jose Mourinho last season after witnessing his heroics at Wolves during his time in the English Premier League. Additionally, the Portuguese goalkeeper didn't disappoint his master in his first season in Italy and delivered the best performance of his career. Patricio kept 15 clean sheets last season and was a crucial member of the leadership group. Roma will again rely on him to guard the fort.
Centre back- Gianluca Mancini
The sensational Gianluca Mancini emerged last season as one of Jose Mourinho's pillars of trust in the defence. He started almost every game and played a pivotal role in securing a Europa League spot for the team. Having joined Roma from Atlanta in 2019, Mancini has been a key member of the team and will likely share defensive duties again in the upcoming season.
Centre back- Roger Ibanez
Roger Ibanez was an ever-present in defence last season for Jose Mourinho. The Brazilian defender was undoubtedly the best defender for Roma last season, starting 32 games in Serie A. The upcoming season will be a crucial one for AS Roma, and Ibanez's contribution will likely determine how they perform.
Centre back- Chris Smalling
Smalling's career has taken a turn for the better since he arrived in Rome. For years, the English defender warmed the bench at Manchester United but has since emerged as Roma's most influential defender. Smalling and Mourinho have already worked together at Old Trafford, and Mourinho understands the importance of this English defender in his team. Smalling made 27 appearances last season in Serie A and will be a starter in the upcoming season.
Right wing back- Zeki Celik
Zeki Celik is one of the new players at Stadio Olimpico this season. The Turkish right back has arrived from French club Lille. He was a key figure at Lille and played a big role in their French League winning season in 2020-21. Mourinho used Rick Karsdorp on the right last season, but Celik might get the nod due to his overall ability. Celik is a typical Mourinho-type player with a ruthless character.
Left wing back - Leonardo Spinazzola
Leonardo Spinazzola was the hero behind Italy's triumph in Euro 2020. However, he suffered a career-threatening injury in the quarterfinals, causing him to miss 10 months of action. Now that he has regained full fitness, he will be hoping to carry on from where he left off. Spinazzola looked really sharp in pre-season as well and is one of the certain starters.
Central midfielder- Lorenzo Pellegrini
Lorenzo Pellegrini was one of the biggest shining stars in Mourinho's team last season. The Italian midfielder scored nine goals and provided five assists in 28 appearances last season in Serie A. However, he may have less attacking responsibility following Dybala's arrival. Nevertheless, Pellegrini is used to playing midfield and will hope to lead the squad once again.
Central midfielder- Gini Wijnaldum
Gini Wijnaldum has arrived from Paris Saint-Germain on loan this summer. The Dutch midfielder didn't have a great time in Paris and is looking forward to a fresh start under Jose Mourinho. Wijnaldum has the street-smart ability and might now have a coach who can unlock his full potential of. With Pellegrini, Matic and Wijnaldum are likely to form a midfield duo, and Mourinho may prefer Wijnaldum due to his dominating style.
Right attacking midfielder- Nicolo Zaniolo
The future of Nicolo Zaniolo at Olimpico Stadium has been the subject of much speculation this summer. However, despite big interest from Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur, the Italian attacker appears destined to stay at Roma. With two goals and two assists in 28 appearances, Zaniolo looked decent after returning from an injury last season. The combination of him, Dybala and Pellegrini in preseason games has shown real promise, and he will be hoping to continue during the season as well.
Left attacking midfielder- Paulo Dybala
The arrival of Paulo Dybala at Olimpico Stadium is one of the biggest buzzes in Serie A this season. The Argentinian forward has been welcomed by fans with a lot of love and dozens of expectations. In pre-season games, Dybala has looked really comfortable and will play an important role in attack in the coming season. Dybala is likely to play his natural attacking midfielder role and will be hoping to live up to big expectations from fans.
Striker- Tammy Abraham
Tammy Abraham's resurgence last season was one of the highlights of world football. With 27 goals in all competitions under Jose Mourinho, he looked an absolute beast. With Dybala, Zaniolo and Pellegrini behind him, he has big creative maniacs who can feed him great assists. Abraham plays a vital role in Mourinho's Roma side, and the coming year could be memorable for him.
