Top five youngsters to watch out for in Serie A 2022-23 season
The Italian top flight is home to some of the world's most exciting prospects.
Serie A is one of the most competitive football leagues. With multiple top clubs such as Inter Milan, AC Milan, AS Roma, Napoli, Juventus, etc. battling out to become the champions of Italy, this league has great entertainment value. The league has been home to many legends who have started their careers here and stayed throughout. The traditional thought of this league being slow-paced and meant for older players is far gone. The Serie A is developing some of the world’s most exciting players.
In this article we will cover the top talents who would be looking to have an excellent 2022-2023 season in Serie A:
5. Mikkel Damsgaard (Sampdoria)
Mikel Damsgaard is a Dutch international who plays as a winger (left winger) for Sampdoria. The 21-year-old came into the limelight with his excellent performance at the Euros 2020. He came in as a replacement for Christian Eriksen. His performances were instrumental in guiding Denmark to the semi-finals of the tournament. The past season, the winger managed only 11 appearances. But he will be looking to change this and maximize his abilities with the ball.
4. Ivan Ilic (Hellas Verona)
Ivan Ilic is a Serbian who plays for Hellas Verona in the central midfield position. The 21-year-old is regarded as a very strong player and has excellent control of the ball. He is usually placed ahead of his defence, more like a defensive midfielder to provide them additional protection. Along with this he also has excellent abilities to move the ball further keeping possession intact. He would look to replicate fellow national Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s impact on Lazio in Hellas Verona. Rival clubs such as Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Napoli are currently tracking the player. He completed his move to Italy in 2021 from Manchester City.
3. Aaron Hickey (Bologna)
Aaron Hickey is a Scottish international who plays as a left-back for Bologna. He is one of the few revelations of the Serie A 2021/22 season. The former Hearts left-back became the first Scottish player to score 5 goals in a season in Serie A since Graeme Souness in the early 1980s. In total, he had 6 goal contributions in the league. This is an incredible stat from a young left-back. Multiple Premier League teams such as Arsenal, West Ham, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Brentford are considering a move for him. Arsenal and Tottenham look the strongest contender to sign the defender.
2. Felix Afena-Gyan (AS Roma)
Felix Afena-Gyan is a Ghanian who plays as a striker for AS Roma. In 17 Serie A appearances, the 19-year-old forward has scored 2 goals. He still has a long way to go and can learn a lot from team-mate Tammy Abraham who had an excellent season with Roma. Jose Mourinho prefers African strikers and should the manager have a long spell in Roma, we can see Afena-Gyan develop as a world-class striker. His 2 goals came against Genoa which even earned him trainers worth €800 from Mourinho. He is known for his blistering pace which can be dangerous for any defender.
1. Matias Soule (Juventus)
Matias Soule is an Argentine forward who plays in the attacking role for Juventus. The 19-year-old is one of the few Argentine sensations who is not compared to legend Lionel Messi. Instead, people see traits of Angel Di Maria in him because of his ability to cut inside and threaten the goal from wide areas. He made 2 appearances last season which lasted only 4 minutes. With multiple attackers such as Alvaro Morata, Paulo Dybala, and Federico Bernardeschi leaving Juventus, it will be a golden opportunity for the youngster to make his impact.
