The Cabo Verde national football team played their most monumental encounter of the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup. They faced off against the defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32 clash at Miami Stadium.

Cabo Verde have made enough history in just their first-ever World Cup appearance. While much was not expected from the side, they took the footballing world by storm after scripting a historic passage to the knockout round.

They started their campaign against reigning European champions Spain, holding the team to an unbelievable 0-0 draw. They continued their incredible start, holding Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to draws, defying all odds to finish second in their group.

They battled against the defending champions, Argentina, in the Round of 32. Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute. However, the African nation scored back in the 59th minute through Deroy Duarte, forcing the game into extra time.

Argentina began the extra time by securing the lead through Lisandro Martínez. However, once again, Cabo Verde made a comeback. Sidny Lopes Cabral scored an astonishing curling shot in the 103rd minute.

Sidny Lopes Cabral was born on September 18, 2002, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, with Cape Verdean descent. The player’s family migrated before his birth. He started his youth career, featuring for the youth teams of FC Twente and Swedish side Helsingborgs IF.

Lopes Cabral ultimately chose to represent Cabo Verde internationally. He made his senior international debut in 2023 and has been a crucial player for the Blue Sharks since. His electric pace and defensive discipline on the flanks have been very useful for his side.

Lopes Cabral is currently representing the Cape Verde national football team at the FIFA World Cup 2026. He has been instrumental in the defence for his side, playing a massive role in the nation’s historic run in their debut campaign.

The 23-year-old scored his first-ever knockout goal for Cabo Verde against defending champions Argentina. He fired a beautiful shot from the edge of the area into the back of the net to equalise the scoreline in a thrilling battle.

In his club career, he started by featuring for German sides Rot-Weiß Erfurt and Viktoria Köln, playing a huge role in his development. In 2024, he signed with Portuguese side Estrela da Amadora, gaining massive accolades as one of the breakout stars of the Primeira Liga.
