The footballing world is in deep shock as South African midfielder Jayden Adams passed away at the age of 25. Representing Mamelodi Sundowns at club level, he featured in all three of South Africa’s FIFA World Cup 2026 fixtures.

The news has sent shockwaves across the football community, with fans across the world mourning his loss. The player was declared deceased after his body was discovered on July 11 at his residential property in Schotschekloof, Cape Town.

Who is Jayden Adams?

He was an integral part of the Bafana Bafana in the FIFA World Cup 2026, where he featured in all group stage fixtures, starting in the tournament opener against Mexico and the Czech Republic, and coming on as a substitute against South Korea, with the player being praised heavily for his performances.

South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed his absolute shock at the loss of the young talent. He highlighted that Adams played in the World Cup immediately after his grandmother’s death and praised the high level of character and professionalism the player possessed.

The Minister urged the public and media to avoid speculation regarding the cause of death, while requesting space for the family and club.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams.”

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”

“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed, and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time.“

“Any official information will be communicated by the appropriate parties in due course.”

The South African Football Federation (SAFA) and South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) have released their official statements, sharing their condolences while requesting privacy for family in this difficult situation.
