La Roja are one of the title favourites for this year’s World Cup.
Spain take on Austria in their Round of 32 fixture in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on July 2. La Roja are one of the biggest favourites to win the title in this year’s expanded 48-team edition in North America.
Luis de la Fuente’s side had a shocking start to their group-stage campaign. The two-time world champions were held to a goalless draw by debutants Cape Verde. However, they bounced back in the next match, beating Saudi Arabia 4-0.
The European giants then sealed their place in the knockout stages with a hard-fought 1-0 win over 10-man Uruguay, with Alex Baena scoring the winner. They will be the favourites once again against Austria, who qualified after a crazy draw with Algeria on the final matchday.

Let’s look at the Spain confirmed lineup for the FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Austria:

Spain (4-3-3): Unai Simon; Pedro Porro, Pau Cubarsi, Aymeric Laporte, Marc Cucurella; Dani Olmo, Rodri (c), Pedri; Lamine Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal, Alex Baena.
Substitutes: Joan Garcia (GK), David Raya (GK), Eric Garcia, Gavi, Alejandro Grimaldo, Borja Iglesias, Marcos Llorente, Mikel Merino, Victor Munoz, Yeremy Pino, Marc Pubill, Fabian Ruiz, Ferran Torres, Nico Williams, Martin Zubimendi.
Thoughts on the lineup
De la Fuente has little reason to tinker with a winning team, so Unai Simon retains his place between the sticks. The Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper has been superb for his country and continues to be the first choice over Joan Garcia and David Raya.
The centre-back pairing of Aymeric Laporte and Pau Cubarsi has been ever-present in the World Cup and starts tonight. Marc Cucurella starts on the left. Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro replaces Marcos Llortente on the right.
Rodri anchors the midfield for La Roja, and he is joined by Pedri and Dani Olmo, with the latter replacing Mikel Merino. Fabian Ruiz and Gavi are options off the bench for the head coach.
De la Fuente, however, has had to deal with injuries to multiple attacking players. Yeremy Pino, Nico Williams, and Victor Munoz are all doubts, having suffered a wide array of knocks. As a result, Alex Baena retains his place on the left wing. Lamine Yamal starts on the right, with Mikel Oyarzabal starting as the centre-forward.
