The FIFA World Cup 2026 has reached its conclusion, with the ultimate battle set between two heavyweight nations, who paved their way through difficult paths to book their spot. Spain are set to take on Argentina in one of the historic fixtures in World Cup history, with both nations clashing in the final at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, USA.
Spain entered the competition with massive expectations, with the Luis de la Fuente-led side targeting their second World Cup title after winning it in 2010. They easily navigated through the group stages, topping the group, unbeaten.
They had an impressive path in the knockout rounds, managing a comfortable 3-0 victory against Austria in the Round of 32. Spain then played arch-rivals Portugal in the Round of 16, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
They then defeated Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals, after a 88th-minute winner. Spain then secured a comfortable 2-0 win in the semi-final to confirm their spot in the final for the first time since 2010.
Argentina, captained by Lionel Messi, arrived as defending champions, aiming for their second consecutive title, becoming only the third nation to achieve the feat. They had a brilliant start to their campaign, finishing as table toppers with a perfect record.
They had a gruelling path in the knockout stages, Argentina first defeated Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time in the Round of 32. In the Round of 16, they scripted an incredible comeback victory against Egypt, winning 3-2 after being 2-0 down until the 78th minute.

They then defeated Switzerland 3-1 after extra time in the quarter-finals, before overcoming England 2-1 in a thrilling semi-final to qualify for consecutive finals, for only the second time in the nation’s history.
Spain and Argentina share a highly competitive history, having previously played 14 times, with both sides winning six games. This will officially mark the second World Cup meeting between both nations, with their only previous encounter being 60 years prior during the 1966 World Cup group stage, with Argentina securing a 2-1 victory.
