Spain and Argentina are set for World Cup meeting after 60 years.

The FIFA World Cup 2026, after months of intense battle, has narrowed down to its final two incredible nations. In a historic final, the Spain national football team will face the reigning World Cup champions, Argentina, at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, USA.

Spain entered the competition with high expectations to re-establish themselves as a global heavyweight, having previously won their only title in 2010. Spain had an excellent start under manager Luis de la Fuente, finishing as group leaders, undefeated.

They then managed a comfortable 3-0 win against Austria in the Round of 32. They then faced arch-rivals Portugal in the Round of 16, securing a 1-0 win, led by a 91st-minute winner. Spain then played Belgium in the quarter-finals, managing a 2-1 win, before defeating France 2-0 in the semi-finals to qualify for the final for the first time since 2010.

Argentina, captained by icon Lionel Messi, will target their second consecutive World Cup title to become only the third nation to achieve the feat. They had a brilliant start to the tournament, topping their group with a perfect record.

They were massively tested in the knockout rounds, defeating tournament debutants Cape Verde 3-2 in extra time. Argentina then scripted one of the biggest comebacks in World Cup history, securing a dramatic 3-2 win against Egypt after being 2-0 down until the 78th minute.

They then won 3-1 against Switzerland in extra time in the quarter-finals, before overcoming England 2-1 in a thrilling semi-final to secure their place in back-to-back finals, for only the second time in the nation’s history.

Spain and Argentina share a highly competitive history, with both sides winning six games each across 14 encounters. Their only previous meeting at the World Cup came 60 years prior during the group stage of the 1966 World Cup, with Argentina securing a 2-1 victory.
