A spot in the Round of 16 is up for grabs!
Spain and Austria will meet in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after both nations successfully progressed from their respective groups.
The contest will be one of the tournament favourites against Austria, managed by Ralf Rangnick, whose high-intensity pressing system has troubled opponents throughout the competition so far.
Several player matchups across the pitch could prove decisive in determining which side progresses to the Round of 16.
5. Pedri vs Konrad Laimer
The flow of Spain’s game through midfield is based on how well Pedri manages to hold onto the ball and move it forward in the centre, while Austria‘s Laimer may be able to use his ability to put pressure on opponents and work hard at defending the ball to try and prevent Spain from building up their attacks.
One of the key components of Rangnick’s pressing philosophy has been Laimer as an integral part of the system, so it would be expected that he would do everything he can to limit both time and space for Barcelona’s Pedri on the ball.
4. Lamine Yamal vs Kevin Danso

Spain’s most dangerous wide attacker is Yamal, thanks to his speed and skill at beating defenders in one-on-one situations.
During the group stage, Danso has also started all three of Austria’s games. It will likely be one of the players who need to help stop the 18-year-old winger from getting behind them, especially when transitioning from offence to defence or when recovering after a defensive possession.

3. Marcel Sabitzer vs Pedro Porro
Sabitzer remains Austria’s primary source of goals from midfield. If he slips into the right half-space, it will be up to Porro to combine his attacking duties with defensive discipline and stop Austria getting behind Spain’s defence. Sabitzer found the net in Austria’s big final group game against Algeria.
2. Marko Arnautović vs Pau Cubarsí
Arnautović brings a physical edge to Austria’s attack and is also the most experienced attacker. Cubarsí, meanwhile, has started every match for Spain during the tournament and has been part of a defence that kept three clean sheets in the group stage.
1. Unai Simón vs Alexander Schlager
Goalkeepers play an important role in knockout football, particularly in matches decided by fine margins.
Simón enters the fixture as Spain’s established number one, whereas Schlager has been a key player for Austria throughout the tournament. If a tie situation drags on deep into the second half or extra time, their shot-stopping and penalty-area control skills may prove vital.
With Spain’s possession-based approach facing Austria’s aggressive pressing structure, these individual contests could play a major role in deciding who advances to the Round of 16.
