Spain vs Austria: Top five players to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026 clash ft. Lamine Yamal & Marcel Sabitzer

One of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 matches will be contested by Spain and Austria. Each has a combination of veterans and players in the prime of their playing careers. 

Spain led Group H with a total of seven points from three games. Meanwhile, Austria qualified as the second-place team from Group J.

The matchup features one of the teams that are heavily favoured to win the tournament. The other one is an underdog team attempting to advance to the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954. 

Players on each side have already played a significant role in helping their respective teams reach this stage of the tournament. It is expected that many of these same players will continue to play an important role in the knockout stages of the tournament.

5. Marcel Sabitzer

Marcel Sabitzer continues to be Austria’s primary midfield driving force.

The midfielder contributes in both defensive and attacking phases. Meanwhile, his ability to arrive late into the penalty area has produced important goals throughout his international career. Sabitzer’s work rate and long-range shooting make him one of Austria’s biggest attacking weapons.

Spain may enter the contest as favourites, but Sabitzer’s performance could have a significant impact on the outcome of the Round of 32 encounter.

4. David Alaba

Alaba is the captain of the Austrian national team. He is also the most experienced international player ever to represent Austria.

His versatility means he could play as a centre back, left back, or defensive midfielder midweek against Spain, whose attacking style relies heavily on keeping the ball. Alaba’s experience with top-level international tournaments and knockout competitions may ultimately be the difference between success and failure for Austria.

3. Dani Olmo

Spain have an abundant source of creativity through Dani Olmo’s attacking versatility. The attacking midfielder can operate as a winger, central playmaker or false nine. He has consistently delivered goals and assists for both club and country in recent seasons.

His movement in the final third makes him one of Spain’s most unpredictable attacking options.

2. Pedri

Pedro González López remains central to Spain’s midfield structure. He dictates tempo, links defence with attack and regularly leads La Roja’s ball progression and chance creation metrics. His composure in high-pressure situations.

His ability to retain possession in tight areas will prove to be key when dealing with Austria’s midfield press.

1. Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal has emerged as one of the most important attacking players despite being one of the youngest members of the La Roja squad. Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 victory included key contributions from Yamal’s performance. He has also come into the World Cup after having another successful individual season with FC Barcelona.

In addition, he provides a great threat. He can play on either side. The La Masia graduate can take on defenders one-on-one, as well as find teammates during transitions.
