Spain reaches the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2010

A FIFA World Cup that began with 48 teams is now down to just eight, with the quarter-finals set to decide who moves one step closer to lifting football’s biggest prize. Spain, one of the favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup before the tournament began, have battled their way into the last eight, where they will face an in-form Belgium side.

The quarter-final clash is scheduled to take place at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California, United States, on July 10, 2026. The winners will book a place in the semi-finals, where they will face either France or Morocco.

Spain began their campaign with a draw against Cape Verde before registering victories over Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to progress from the group stage. They comfortably defeated Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 before edging past Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16. While La Roja struggled to break down Portugal for much of the contest, substitute Mikel Merino came off the bench to score the decisive goal late in the game and send Spain through to the quarterfinals.

Belgium, meanwhile, endured a difficult group stage after opening with two consecutive draws before finishing strongly with a victory over New Zealand. They looked destined for elimination in the Round of 32 against Senegal before staging a remarkable comeback in the closing stages to force extra time, eventually scoring a dramatic 125th-minute winner. In the Round of 16, however, they produced one of their most convincing performances of the tournament, defeating hosts USA 4-1.

As these two sides take the field in California, Spain may be considered slight favorites by some, but Belgium have shown enough quality throughout the tournament to make this an evenly poised contest.

Here are five key battles that could decide the outcome of this quarter final.

5. Rodri vs Hans Vanaken

Spain’s midfield is yet to reach its full potential during the tournament, with Pedri struggling to consistently influence games. However, captain Rodri has continued to provide stability in the middle of the park. Operating as the team’s deepest midfielder, Rodri dictates the tempo through his exceptional passing range and composure in possession. Defensively, his positional awareness allows him to regularly break up opposition attacks with well-timed interceptions and recoveries.

He is expected to come up against Hans Vanaken, who is likely to operate in a more advanced midfield role ahead of Youri Tielemans and Nicolas Raskin. Vanaken combines outstanding vision and creativity with intelligent late runs into the penalty area, using his physical presence and aerial ability to become an additional goal-scoring threat. He has already registered one goal and two assists in the tournament.

4. Mikel Oyarzabal vs Nathan Ngoy

Spain may not possess a traditional target man up front, but Mikel Oyarzabal has proven to be equally effective in his own way. Playing as a false nine, Oyarzabal constantly drifts into dangerous spaces, makes intelligent off-the-ball runs and finishes chances efficiently. He has already registered five goal contributions during the tournament.

His tactical flexibility also allows him to drop deeper and create space for Dani Olmo to move into advanced positions, while he can also rotate with Alex Baena on the left flank. Standing in his way will be Nathan Ngoy, who returned to Belgium’s starting lineup against the USA after serving a suspension.

Ngoy is a highly rated young centre-back known for his excellent one-on-one defending and outstanding recovery pace, attributes that will be crucial against Oyarzabal’s movement. However, he can sometimes be overly aggressive in challenges, making him susceptible to conceding unnecessary fouls or picking up bookings.

3. Charles De Ketelaere vs Aymeric Laporte

Belgium have enjoyed healthy competition for the center-forward position throughout the tournament, with both Charles De Ketelaere and Romelu Lukaku producing impressive performances. While Lukaku appeared to have overtaken him in the pecking order, De Ketelaere responded in emphatic fashion by registering two goals and an assist against the USA.

Operating as a false nine, De Ketelaere excels through his intelligent link-up play and constant positional interchanges, adding unpredictability to Belgium’s attack. However, inconsistency in front of goal remains one of the weaker aspects of his game.

Aymeric Laporte could have a difficult evening against the Belgian forward, as agile attackers who rely on quick combinations and sharp turns have occasionally troubled the Spanish defender. That said, Laporte remains one of Spain’s most reliable defenders, combining excellent ball-playing ability with aerial dominance and proactive defending to read danger before it develops.

2. Leandro Trossard vs Pedro Porro

Leandro Trossard has arguably been Belgium’s most dangerous attacking player over the past three matches. The Arsenal forward has scored twice while also providing an assist in each of those games. His intelligent movement into central areas and far-post positions, combined with his quick feet and low center of gravity, makes him extremely dangerous in tight spaces.

He will face Pedro Porro, one of Spain’s most athletic full-backs. While Trossard could find opportunities to exploit space during transitions, Porro possesses the recovery pace and aggressive defensive approach needed to recover quickly and engage attackers early.

Going the other way, Porro is equally influential in attack with his overlapping runs and dangerous deliveries. Trossard will therefore need to contribute defensively to help contain the combined threat of Porro and Lamine Yamal down Spain’s right flank.

1. Lamine Yamal vs Maxim De Cuyper

Lamine Yamal entered the tournament as one of the biggest stars expected to light up the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland. However, the young Spanish winger has yet to fully explode into life, scoring just once so far, a goal that came against Saudi Arabia.

Opposition teams have consistently looked to double up on him, using physically dominant defenders to limit his influence and make him feel the intensity of international football. Despite that, Yamal remains Spain’s biggest attacking weapon. His exceptional dribbling, outstanding vision, decision-making in the final third and ability to score from the tightest of angles make him a constant threat whenever he receives the ball.

Maxim De Cuyper, meanwhile, is a technically gifted full back who enjoys making adventurous overlapping runs and drifting into midfield during attacking phases. However, one-on-one defending and positional awareness are not among his strongest qualities, weaknesses that a player of Yamal’s caliber will certainly look to exploit.
