Both nations to play at the World Cup for the third time.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 has reached its final stages, with the competition now underway with its quarter-final fixtures. In undoubtedly the biggest clash of the knockout stage, the Spain national football team will face Belgium at the Los Angeles Stadium in California, USA.

Spain, who entered the competition with massive expectations as the reigning European champions, will aim to continue their incredible run to secure the nation’s second world title. The side had a dominant group stage campaign under Luis de la Fuente, finishing as group leaders, unbeaten.

They carried immense momentum into the knockout stages, comfortably defeating a highly regarded Austria in the Round of 32. They then managed a hard-fought 1-0 win over Iberian rivals Portugal in the Round of 16 to confirm their spot in the quarter-finals, led by Mikel Merino’s 91st-minute winner.

The nation will target a record-breaking sixth consecutive clean sheet, displaying their defensive prowess, overtaking Italy’s feat during the 1990 edition.

Belgium, led by manager Rudi Garcia, will target a historic run similar to their legendary 2018 campaign, securing an astonishing third-place finish. The side had an underwhelming start to the tournament, finishing first in their group.

However, they had a dramatic turnaround in form, defeating Senegal 3-2 in the Round of 32, led by a 125th-minute match-winning penalty, after being 2-0 down until the 85th minute. They secured a dominant 4-1 win against tournament co-hosts USA to confirm their fourth World Cup quarter-final appearance.

Both nations are set to meet at the World Cup for the third time in history. They first met 40 years ago in the 1986 quarter-finals, when Belgium secured a dramatic 5-4 victory in penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time. Spain got their revenge in the next edition, when they defeated Belgium 2-1 in the group stages.
