Perched above the tidal waters of the River Wear, the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, United Kingdom, gears up to host Matchweek 10 of the Premier League. Home team Sunderland and reigning world champions Chelsea lock horns in what is set to be a thrilling clash.
The Black Cats find themselves at the bottom of the points table after clinching just a solitary win in the first nine games. It has been nothing less than a nightmare for Regis Le Bris’ side, who are coming after consecutive defeats to Coventry and Dinamo Zagreb.
They are winless in their last seven Premier League games. Their home form has also not been optimistic, as they scored just once in their last four home games in the Stadium of Light. They urgently need a win to get themselves out of the relegation zone.
The Blues are enjoying the time of their lives under Xabi Alonso, who has done a pretty decent job after taking over. The London outfit are placed fourth in the points table. A win can solidify Chelsea’s spot in the top four.
They have been brilliant offensively, scoring 10 goals in their last five games. In their last five games, they are unbeaten apart from that 2-0 defeat to Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. They are coming off a 2-0 win over Manchester United in their most recent encounter.
Players to Watch
Robin Roefs (Sunderland)
It has been nothing less than a nightmare for Robin Roefs between the sticks, who has conceded 17 goals in nine games in the English top tier. He has managed to keep just two clean sheets so far. A bigger challenge awaits next as they take on one of the highest goalscoring teams in the tournament.
He catches diagonal deliveries cleanly to prevent second-ball scrambles. He is often known for triggering counterattacks after gathering the ball by looking for quick overhand throws.
Romeo Lavia (Chelsea)
The Belgian midfielder gave an assist in the last game and has also found the back of the net once in seven games for Chelsea. He has been a dominating force in the midfield for Xabi Alonso’s side.
A calm presence in the Chelsea midfield, he positions himself in the central channels to break up counterattacks during transition plays. He will be up against the veteran Granit Xhaka in the midfield. He is also known for slowing down the tempo of the game by taking an extra touch to close down slender leads.
