Churchill Brothers got past Dynamos but flunk to the Bagan test.
Mohun Bagan managed to make it three out of three this season against Churchill Brothers when the defeated them 2-1 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday in the Hero Super Cup. Though Willis Deon Plaza opened the scoring for Churchill, a fantastic brace from Dipanda Dicka sealed the quarter-final berth for Bagan. After the final whistle, Bagan’s Australian import Cameron Watson shared his views on the encounter.
Could you talk us through the game?
I think we controlled most of the game, to be honest. We gave them half a chance in the first half and they took it, so credit to them. But I felt that we could always score. Credit to Churchill Brothers for fighting for the whole 90 minutes, even after we went 2-1 up. I think we made it a little hard for ourselves and couldn’t be decisive in the final third, but that’s what pressure games do to people. But in the end, we’re happy with the win.
How did the conditions affect the game?
The conditions were good for me! I loved it, it was perfect. Nice, cool and a bit of rain. I might like it, but some of the local boys may not like it as much. But you can’t ask for more than this to be fair, especially in knockout tournaments.
Are you confident going into the quarter-finals?
Yes. We don’t know who we will be playing yet, but I don’t think it will matter. I think just the way the tournament is set up with the knockouts, a lot of players are saying that no matter who you play, it will always be a tough opposition. You saw it in the first game today between Gokulam Kerala FC and Bengaluru FC as well. I think all the games, no matter who plays who, will have a good showcase.

They are awesome! Thankfully it’s just a short trip for them, which is good. Having them in the background in such an environment will help us get over the line in the next games. So thank you very much.
