Switzerland name squad for September-October international window; Breel Embolo called up

Nati will begin their Nations League competition against North Macedonia
Switzerland, which reached the World Cup quarterfinals, gave 20-year-old Sion striker Winsley Boteli his first international call-up.
Switzerland manager Murat Yakin also included 20-year-old Parma defender Sascha Britschgi in his 25-man Nations League squad for matches against Scotland, Slovenia, and North Macedonia.
Granit Xhaka arrives from his amazing World Cup performance to enhance his national record of 152 appearances. The Sunderland midfielder turns 34 on September 26, the day of Switzerland’s Nations League second-tier group opener against North Macedonia.
Breel Embolo, who was mistakenly sent off in the World Cup quarterfinals against Argentina, was chosen following his transfer to Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United.
A third uncapped player, 21-year-old centre-back Zachary Athekame, is back in the team while on loan from AC Milan to Lyon.
Switzerland will face North Macedonia in an intriguing UEFA Nations League group-stage match on October 6, 2026, at the Swissporarena in Luzern. This pivotal matchup pits two motivated European nations against each other as each competes for critical group points.
Athekame and Boteli join the group, which also includes World Cup breakout sensation Johan Manzambi, Denis Zakaria, and Zeki Amdouni. Switzerland will play Scotland on September 29, followed by back-to-back home games against Slovenia and North Macedonia in Lucerne.
Nati have won four of their previous five matches, with one loss and no draws in that span.
