The event will take place in the City of Joy on December 15.

Hernan Crespo, the legendary Argentine striker and three-time FIFA World Cup participant has been roped in as the International Event Ambassador for Tata Steel Kolkata 25K. It is the only 25km IAAF silver label race in the world and would now be graced by Crespo’s presence in Kolkata on the 15th of December.

The former striker expressed his pleasure upon being bestowed with this position as he said, “I am honoured to be a part of the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K. As a footballer running has held a special place in my career. Whether it is sprinting from one end of the football field to another, or jogging waiting for the ball, running has been an important part of my life. Argentina have played here once and I know that in this city many people follow and support Argentina. So, I am already feeling at home.”

Hernan Crespo has had a very successful career. which included one time when he was even the most expensive player in the world. That was when he was bought by Lazio from Parma for a fee of €56m, a hefty sum back in 2000. He won three Serie A titles and a single Premier League crown. In addition, Crespo also got his hands on a prestigious silver medal at the 1996 Olympic Games.

He is Argentina’s fourth-highest goalscorer of all-time, as he bagged 35 of them throughout the course of his career with the national team. He spent two seasons with Chelsea, in 2003-04 and then 2005-06 and even scored 20 goals in 49 league matches for the Blues. Pele had named Crespo in the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players back in 2004. More peculiarly, an interesting fact about his entire career is that he never received a red card across two decades of playing.

The Tara Steel Kolkata event consists off marathons/races in five different categories to promote more participation and interest in the sport among people. This includes the 25 km run for professionals and amateurs, a 5 km fun run, an event for runners with disabilities for 4 km, an open 10 km run and a run for senior citizens for 4 km. This will be the sixth edition of the event.
