In the year that marked fans returning to the stadiums, some crazy transfers and the organization of two major continental tournaments, spectacular goals game left, right, and center. From goals that limited distances to just mere numbers to the goals that defied gravity, 2021 had them all.
Since we're in December and on the edge of yet another year full of football, here are the top 10 goals that dropped jaws throughout the calendar year:
10. Edinson Cavani vs. Fulham
15 minutes into the game at Craven Cottage, Edinson Cavani produced a goal that will stay for a while. After receiving a flicked ball from Bruno Fernandes, Cavani caught Alphonse Areola off his line and shot yards away from the halfway line.
9. Mohamed Salah vs. Manchester City
Liverpool, trailing 1-2 at home against title-rivals City got Salah's goal exactly when it was needed. It's fair to say that the former Chelsea forward pulled a rabbit out of his hat, dribbling multiple players before shooting it from a narrow-angle.
8. Lionel Messi vs. Chile
Messi placed the freekick precisely on the top left corner, leaving former Barcelona teammate Claudio Bravo helpless despite going for a full stretch.
7. Olivier Giroud vs. Atletico Madrid
Against a tight and gritty defensive unit, Olivier Giroud leaped for an overhead kick and left everyone in awe with the strike past Jan Oblak.
6. Lionel Messi vs. Paris Saint-Germain
Setting out to break on a counter, Lionel Messi moved swiftly and created space for himself outside of the box, as he struck from 30 yards out. The shot looked unstoppable, as Keylor Navas could only do little to deal with it.
5. Mehdi Taremi vs. Chelsea
The acrobatic goal by Mehdi Taremi against Chelsea came in the third minute of added time.The goal was later picked as the goal of the tournament for the 2020/21 Champions League campaign.
4. Robert Lewandowski vs. Dynamo Kyiv
Another one of the best goals of the calendar year of 2021 came in the form of an overhead kick, as Robert Lewandowski scored a sumptuous goal against Dynamo Kyiv. The Polish forward's bicycle kick came in a cold, snowy night at Kyiv, making it more memorable for the times to come.
3. Erik Lamela vs. Arsenal
Coming on for the injured Heung-min Son at the North London derby, the Argentinian brought a taste of South American excellence to the pitch with a Rabona goal. Sergio Reguilon's rection on the 33rd-minute goal summed up the brilliance and spontaneity of the strike that came out of nowhere the Spurs.
2. Luis Diaz vs. Brazil
If anything was talked about widely except Argentina's Copa America win, it was Luis Diaz's stunning overhead volley against Brazil. The Porto midfielder found the net in the 10th minute, meeting a diagonal ball from Cuadrado. For a player of Diaz's capabilities, one that likes to play on the ground, the finish was indeed a beautiful one.
1. Patrik Schick vs. Scotland
Patrik Schick's outrageous strike remain as EURO 2020's highlight for years to come. In their first group match against Scotland, the number ten scored a brace to steer the Czech Republic towards victory. The Goal of the Tournament came from 49.7 yards.
