Top 10 most followed clubs on Facebook in 2022
These teams have their social media game on point.
In today's world, social media presence of football clubs on digital platforms matters a lot. Several fans find it easy to connect with their favourite clubs and stay updated via Instagram, Facebook and other such media. Just like for trophies, top clubs are also competing for social media reach and following.
Let's take a look at the top 10 most followed clubs on Facebook.
10. Arsenal - 39 million
The Gunners have struggled a bit lately - both on the pitch and off it. Arsenal FC started off the 2021-22 season well but eventually failed to qualify for the Champions League. It has been four seasons now that Arsenal has played Champions League football. Up until a few years ago, Arsenal were at par with Liverpool and PSG. However, they have seem to hit a roadblock.
Despite the hardships, Arsenal are improving gradually and are gaining back the love and support from their fans. With Gabriel Jesus and Zinchenko arriving from Manchester City, Arsenal look stronger than ever.
9. Liverpool - 39 Million
Liverpool are Manchester United's only Premier League rival in terms of trophies. Their trophy tallies are a testament to that. The club has struggled a lot in the recent past, especially since the uprising of social media.
Before the arrival of Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool were struggling for decades. Even when Klopp took over, it took some seasons for Liverpool to achieve wonders. The Scousers did the unthinkable and finally won the Premier League title in 19/20. It was one of the most joyous moments in the club because they had won it after 30 years.
8. Manchester City - 40 million
The Cityzens do not have much history in comparison to Arsenal. A big reason for their imploding fanbase is their success in recent years. The '93:20' Aguero moment back in 2012 was the start of a journey. The arrival of Pep Guardiola brought about more fans and excitement to the club. As was expected, Pep dominated the league. Manchester City has won the league four times in five years under Pep Guardiola.
The club has a huge presence online but are always criticized for having empty stadiums. Despite this, Manchester City are under pressure to win the CL title.
7. Juventus - 44 million
Many people already know the reason behind Juventus's upsurge on social media. The signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid broke the internet. Fans went berserk as they welcomed the Portuguese. However, Ronaldo and Juventus did not seem to work as expected. Cristiano's primary goal was to win the Champions League with the Old Lady. After three seasons, Ronaldo failed to complete his goal and left to join Manchester United.
However, the only reason behind Juventus's fanbase is not Cristiano Ronaldo. They are a legendary club having won the most Serie A titles, and most in a row (7). They have also won the Champions League twice. Juventus have also reached the Champions League finals nine times.
6. Chelsea FC - 49 million
Just a season ago, Chelsea were the winners of the Champions League. Everything seemed to be going well under Thomas Tuchel. However, it did not. The very next season, Real Madrid did the impossible and beat Chelsea to the continental title. Karim Benzema scored a hat-trick against the Blues to secure the win.
This season, Chelsea have lost several quality players. The Blues bought Romelu Lukaku for a huge sum but he failed miserably. As a result, they loaned him back to Inter Milan. Timo Werner, another talented forward, failed. The Blues sold him back to his former club RB Leipzig. Chelsea have also lost the services of Marcos Alonso, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. FC Barcelona poached Raphinha and Lewandowski, players under Chelsea's radar. It would not be surprising if Chelsea were to see a dip in form and also in terms of support from fans.
5. FC Bayern Munich -53 million
The German giants and the only Bundesliga club which can be classified as 'The Greatest' alongside Barcelona, Real Madrid and a few others. Bayern Munich have won a total of 6 European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles in their history. The Bavarians won the Champions League just two seasons ago. They are even more fierce in the Bundesliga. Bayern have now won the Bundesliga 10 years in a row.
Bayern have one of the most loyal fanbases in football. Football rules in Germany allow fans to hold a majority of their voting rights. This would never allow any German club to fall into the wrong hands. Despite the departure of star striker Robert Lewandowski, Sadio Mane's arrival has created excitement at Allianz Arena.
4. Paris Saint-Germain - 56 million
There's not much history behind Paris Saint-Germain's huge fanbase. The transfer windows and the signing of stars has brought forward millions of fans in recent years. PSG have signed David Beckham, Ronaldinho and various other stars in the past as well.
The transfer of Neymar Jr from Barcelona broke the headlines. Following this, the arrival of Kylian Mbappe brought forward a deadly duo in football. However, even Neymar and Mbappe together could not win PSG the Champions League. PSG received quite a lot of frustration from the fans after losing in the Champions League regularly. The frustration went silent after the biggest transfer ever for PSG went through. Lionel Messi's transfer increased followers and brought more supporters and financial aid for the club. Moreover, fans wait in excitement as the old and iconic Messi-Neymar duo is finally coming back to life.
3. Manchester United - 74 million
The only place where Manchester United are actually consistent and doing well. The Red Devils have a very loyal fanbase despite their recent hardships. United have failed to win a trophy since the 2016/17 season. In fact, it is highly likely that Manchester United might not win one in the next few years.
The only thing which kept them from falling apart last season were heroics from David De Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo's clutch performances saved them from failure. The appointment of Erik Ten Hag as manager has brought hope to Old Trafford. However, surely change is a slow process and it will take time as the club progresses with new signings.
2. FC Barcelona - 103 million
As expected, FC Barcelona are amongst the top on this list. Barcelona are arguably the biggest club in the world alongside Real Madrid. The trophies and legendary players say it all. Five-time Champions League winners, sextuple winners, treble winners and many more.
The club has suffered a lot since the 2017/18 season. They lost easy and decisive legs against Roma and Liverpool in the UCL. FC Bayern beat them 8-2 in a game. The club went into financial distress forcing them to sell Lionel Messi. Several expensive and talented signings such as Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho failed.
Despite this, fans have remained loyal and are in fact increasing in numbers. This is mainly because of the work of Xavi and Joan Laporta. It seemed like the end of the road for Barcelona but Laporta and Mateu Alemany have been pulling off wonders. Barcelona have signed Frank Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha (so far) this transfer window. All the Culers are finally in high hopes and are expecting the old FC Barcelona to return.
1. Real Madrid - 112 million
Yet again at the top, who else but Real Madrid. Inarguably, the biggest club in football history. Not only in terms of fans but also in terms of trophies. Real Madrid are undoubtedly the kings of the Champions League, winning it 13 times. They are also the only club to win it three times in a row.
Despite the departure of their biggest hero Cristiano Ronaldo, fans have remained loyal to the club. The Los Blancos have won two La Liga titles and one Champions League even after Ronaldo's departure. At Real Madrid, no player ever looks to be bigger than the club. And thus, it tops this list.
