Top 10 successful transfer deals of 2021-22 season
These players made the most of their chances after arriving at their new club.
There are a lot of hopes and expectations following the arrival of a new player at every club. Most often, a new transferred player comes on the back of a huge transfer fee and there is extra pressure on them to perform. That pressure can sometimes get the better of the players, no matter the potential or quality.
Across the 2021-22 season, there were many players who were in the same situation. They were changing clubs, in new surroundings and had to prove their quality immediately to win over the trust of the new club and its fans. There were many high-profile transfers in the 2021 summer transfer window and the 2022 winter transfer window.
While some signings did not perform to the expectations, others managed to exceed them. Looking back at the past season, here are the top-10 successful signings of the 2021-22 season:
Ferran Torres to FC Barcelona
Ferran Torres got his dream move to FC Barcelona after joining the club in the January transfer window. Formerly of Manchester City, the Spaniard attacker cost the La Liga giants €55m. From 26 appearances, Torres scored seven goals and made six assists for the club. The 22-year-old is the future of the club and will spearhead its rebuilding process.
Fikayo Tomori to AC Milan
AC Milan brought in Fikayo Tomori on loan in the January transfer window of 2021. He was permanently signed by the club before the 2021-22 season after decent performances for the Serie A outfit. The former Chelsea FC defender truly established himself as one of the best defenders in Italy in the past season. In hindsight, the transfer fee of €28.80m for Tomori was extremely worth it as Rossoneri won the league title.
Andre Silva to RB Leipzig
Andre Silva is one of the most underrated strikers in Europe. He joined RB Leipzig from Eintracht Frankfurt for a fee in the region of €23.00m. Thanks to his sensational performances, the forward is currently valued at €45.00m. In his first season with the Bundesliga outfit, Silva scored 17 goals and made nine assists across all competitions.
Ibrahima Konate to Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp wanted good support for Virgil van Dijk at the back and Ibrahima Konate came in to fill the role. Dejan Lovren made his way out of the club and his absence was hardly noticed. The centre-back came from RB Leipzig with a €40.00m price tag. By the end of his first season with the Reds, Konate managed to win the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
Lionel Messi to PSG
Lionel Messi made headlines by finally leaving FC Barcelona to join Paris Saint-Germain. He is a legendary figure at the La Liga club, playing there since he was very young and winning multiple trophies. The prospect of Messi playing alongside the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe sent shivers across Europe. In the end, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner scored 11 goals and made 15 assists in his first season across all competitions, lifting the Ligue 1 trophy in the process.
David Alaba to Real Madrid
David Alaba joined Real Madrid from FC Bayern Munich on a free transfer. The 29-year-old Austrian was a huge factor in helping the club win its 14th UEFA Champions League title and the 35th league title. He was one of the best and most successful free transfers of the 2021-22 season.
Mike Maignan to AC Milan
Mike Maignan’s last two seasons have seen him lift both the Ligue 1 title and the Serie A. The goalkeeper won the former with LOSC Lille and the latter with AC Milan. In both instances, Mike’s contributions helped his respective clubs regain their lost status as champions. For AC Milan, the custodian had 17 clean sheets in the league, winning the golden glove in the process.
Tammy Abraham to AS Roma
Tammy Abraham found redemption after struggling for regular game time at Chelsea FC. He joined AS Roma to play under Jose Mourinho for a €40.00m transfer fee. The striker helped the club win the UEFA Europa Conference League in his first full season. Furthermore, he scored 27 goals and made five assists across all competitions for the outfit.
Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United
Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United was the highlight of the 2021-22 season. His move back to the Premier League was the showstopper from the summer transfer window of 2021. The Portuguese international joined the club from Juventus FC and picked up from where he left off years ago. The 36-year-old showed no signs of slowing down, delivering 24 goals and three assists in all competitions.
Luis Diaz to Liverpool
Luis Diaz had a sensational season after joining Liverpool in the winter transfer window. The Reds brought the winger from FC Porto after paying €47m for his services. He took no time in settling well in his new surroundings, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in all competitions for LFC. By the end of the season, Diaz had two winner’s medals from the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup respectively.
