Some of these players could be smart buys for their next employers.

The onset of January 2021 means that several players, who have not received a contract renewal, are in the last six months of their current contracts. It means that these players are free to negotiate with any desirable club looking to secure their services and sign a pre-agreement contract, to play for them from next season onwards. The Premier League has a lot of notable players that are free to sign pre-agreements. These players will be in high demand given the prospect of securing them without any transfer fees involved.

Here are the five Premier League players who could secure pre-agreement moves during the winter transfer window.

5. Shkodran Mustafi

Arsenal’s German defender Shkodran Mustafi seems to have been sidelined since the arrival of Mikel Arteta. Despite being in the squad, the club decided to invest in players like Gabriel and David Luiz, confirming that Mustafi is no longer a vital part of the team.

Mustafi has gone down in the pecking order at Arsenal

The defender is heading towards the end of his contract and a renewal is not in the offing. Several Spanish clubs, including FC Barcelona are planning to sweep in on him. A pre-agreement contract looks very possible as a way out for the outcast.

4. John Lundstram

Sheffield United’s John Lundstram played an important role in the outfit’s impressive performance in the 2019-20 Premier League season. The player is in the final six months of his contract and the club seems to be heading towards relegation.

Reportedly, Lundstram is weighing his options and looking to sign a pre-agreement with a team which will allow him to continue to play in the first division. Burnley and Newcastle United have expressed an interest in signing the player.

3. Fabian Schar

Newcastle United FC’s center-back Fabian Schar is expectedly heading towards the exit. The 29-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and talks of a contract renewal have not advanced as of yet.

The player is valued around €13m and several English clubs are lining up to swoop in on him on a free transfer. He has a considerable amount of experience in the English top-flight, which makes him a suitable option.

2. Giorginio Wijnaldum

Wijnaldum remains undecided on his future

The saga behind Giorginio Wijnaldum’s contract renewal has been doing the round for many months. Jurgen Klopp wants the player to sign a contract extension, but the Dutch international remains undecided on his future.

Moreover, a pre-agreement with FC Barcelona has become the most likely outcome. Reports out of Spain suggested that Ronald Koeman prefers the midfielder and would be interested to sign him.

1. Sergio Aguero

Several clubs have shown interests to sign Aguero

Manchester City’s all-time leading scorer Sergio Aguero’s tenure at the club seems to be coming to an end. The player is heading towards the end of his contract in June and negotiations of renewing his deal have stalled. He has also suffered from injuries of late and Pep Guardiola could make way for Lionel Messi by letting Aguero leave on a free transfer.

A player whose market value is in the region of €35-40m will be a smart signing on a pre-agreement basis. Several european clubs like Paris Saint-Germain have shown an interest, and Inter Miami from the MLS are also looking to sign him on a free transfer.
