Top five clubs with most FA Cup titles in history
Some of these teams are considered among the elite clubs in the world.
Before the emergence of European football, the FA Cup was considered as one of the most prestigious trophy in the world. While the competition may have lost some of its glamour over the years, the magic of the high-profile tournament remains truly alive.
Some of England’s best clubs have won the tournament several times over the years. Keeping it in mind, let’s take a look at the clubs with the most FA Cup victories over the years.
5. Liverpool – 7 trophies
Liverpool are one of the most decorated teams in English football. The Merseyside giants began their era of dominance in the late 1960s with their first English FA Cup title under legendary manager Bill Shankley. The Reds would go on to win six more titles in 1974, 1986, 1989, 1992, 2001, and 2006.
Liverpool opened their FA Cup account against Leeds United in the final, winning the game 2-1 at the Wembley.
4. Tottenham Hotspur – 8 trophies
The surprise entrant on our list, Tottenham have been trophy shy in recent years, but this was not always the case. Spurs have managed to secure the coveted trophy on eight occasions since their first win in 1901. The Lillywhites won their last FA Cup trophy 30 years ago, in 1991, beating Nottingham Forest in the final.
The North London club’s other victories came in 1901, 1921, 1961, 1962, 1967, 1981 and 1982.
3. Chelsea – 8 trophies
Tied up with their London rivals Spurs, Chelsea have been racking up domestic and European trophies in recent seasons. The Blues won their first FA Cup title in 1970, in the very first FA Cup final to be settled through a replay. The replay was played at Old Trafford and went down in history as one of the most brutal games in the history of the sport.
Jack Charlton’s goal late in the game secured the Londoners their very first title, a competition that they would not win again until 1997. Since then, Chelsea have maintained a steady stream of trophies, winning the tournament in 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2018.
2. Manchester United – 13 trophies
The Red Devils are one of the most decorated football teams in England and their 12 victories of the FA Cup have contributed to that statistic. Manchester United won their first trophy in the 1907-08 season when Sandy Turnbull scored against Bristol City.
United would have to wait nearly forty years before their next chance to hold the famous trophy came in 1948, beating Blackpool in the final. From there, the Manchester club would go on to win the competition on a further 10 occasions. The Red Devils won the FA Cup in the 2023-24 season as they beat Man City 2-1 in the final.
1. Arsenal – 14 trophies
The most successful team in the FA Cup, Arsenal have won the prestigious tournament an astounding 14 times. Over the course of the competition’s history, the gunners have remained steady in their dominance of the tournament, picking up regular trophies through the decades. The North London club won their first FA Cup title in 1930 when they beat Huddersfield town in the final.
Arsenal would then go on to win a further 13 FA Cup titles, with their latest win coming in 2020.
