Lionel Messi-led Argentina are joint-fourth on the list!
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has been a goalfest of unprecedented proportions, with 297 goals being scored across 102 matches in North America – making it the most free-scoring edition of the quadrennial tournament.
It is no surprise that Argentina, the defending champions, are at the top of the goalscoring charts. La Albiceleste have netted 19 times en route to the final, where they are scheduled to face Spain. This marks the South American side’s most productive World Cup campaign ever in terms of goals scored.
A key reason for this is the legendary Lionel Messi. The 39-year-old has netted eight goals and registered four assists, currently leading the Golden Boot race and the goal contributions chart.
Despite their remarkable record, La Albiceleste are, astonishingly, only joint-fourth on the all-time list of most goals scored in a single World Cup edition. Let’s dive in.

1970 FIFA World Cup – Brazil (19 goals)
The Selecao plundered 19 goals in the 1970 edition, lifting the trophy after beating Italy 4-1 in the final at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City. Jairzinho finished as the tournament’s second-highest scorer with seven goals, while Pele scored four. Interestingly, only one of their matches ended with a clean sheet: a 1-0 win over England in the group stage.
2026 FIFA World Cup – Argentina (19 goals)
With 19 goals and counting, La Albiceleste are breaking records left and right in their attempt to become only the third team to successfully defend their World Cup title. Messi has contributed about two-thirds of his team’s goals and looks set to lift the Golden Ball after the final on July 19. France, however, have 16 goals and are set to face England in the third-place playoffs.
1950 FIFA World Cup – Brazil (22 goals)
The hosts were the standout team from the 1950 World Cup, scoring a quarter of the 88 goals netted in the tournament. Ademir won the Golden Boot with nine goals, and he netted a brace in a 6-1 win over Spain in the final group stage. However, the shock loss to Uruguay in the final, forever enshrined as the “Maracanazo”, has become a part of World Cup folklore.
1958 FIFA World Cup – France (23 goals)
Although Brazil lifted the World Cup title in Sweden, France staked their claim as one of the new footballing powerhouses. Just Fontaine’s incredible record of 13 goals in just six matches remains the most goals scored by a player in a World Cup – the record is yet to be broken to date. Les Bleus finished third, beating West Germany 6-3, courtesy of four goals from Fontaine.
1954 FIFA World Cup – Hungary (27 goals)
Hungary scored an average of 5.38 goals per game in the 1954 World Cup edition, and still could not lift the title, losing the final to West Germany. Sandor Kocsis managed 11 goals, while Nandor Hidegkuti and Ferenc Puskas netted four each. Incredibly, the Mighty Magyars managed 17 goals in just two group-stage games, beating eventual champions West Germany 8-3.
Which team scored most goals in single FIFA World Cup edition?
Hungary hold the all‑time record, netting 27 goals in 1954, led by Sándor Kocsis with 11 strikes.
