Top five teams with most top four finishes in Premier League history
After 31 seasons, Manchester United dominates among the other elites.
The English Premier League 2022-23 season is nearing its end. Manchester City have been confirmed as the champions. The battle for the top four has also ended with Arsenal, Manchester United, and Newcastle United confirming their presence. Teams these days rely a lot on Champions League football to attract players.
These four teams have the experience of playing at the top level, and this is not the first time they have qualified for the top 4. The English Premier League started in 1992, and this was the 31st season. During these seasons, some of the teams have been consistent in making the top four, while others are making their presence felt with tremendous displays of football. Here are the top teams that have finished most often in the top four.
5. Tottenham Hotspur - 7
Tottenham Hotspur have been ever-present in the Premier League. They have been top-side on occasions and were a mid-table club in some of the seasons. Spurs have been very inconsistent in the Premier League. This has led to no major honours in the league as well as in the cups.
Of the 31 appearances in the league, Spurs have made it seven times to the top four. Their best finish in the Premier League was second in the 2016-17 season. Spurs finished third in the 2015-16 and 2017-18 seasons. This was Tottenham's best spell in the Premier League. This time, they failed to make it to the top four.
4. Manchester City - 13
Manchester City have been one of the best teams in Europe since their takeover in 2008. Earlier, they struggled during the inaugural seasons of the Premier League. Manchester City were twice relegated from the Premier League and have played in 26 seasons. City came third in the 2010-11 season, and this was their best-ever finish in the Premier League. After that, City won the title seven times and recently won their third back-to-back league title.
Now Manchester is recognised because of two clubs. There is a blue side and a red side. In the last 13 seasons, Manchester City have finished in the top four continuously. This run has made them a force to reckon with in Europe. Roberto Mancini started this era, which was taken over by Manuel Pellegrini. Pep Guardiola has been in charge for the last seven seasons. He has won five league titles with City. The numbers are getting better with time for the team in blue.
3. Liverpool - 19
The Reds have been playing in the top division since 1992. They have been a top team and made it to the top four 19 times. However, despite being dominant at times, Liverpool have just won one league title. This title came in the 2019-20 season. The Reds last lifted the title in the 1989-90 season. Liverpool have finished as the runners-up five times.
Liverpool have never finished outside the top ten in the Premier League. They have always entered the season as the title contenders. This season the Reds are likely to finish fifth.
3. Chelsea - 19
The Blues have also played every season and are tied for third with Liverpool. After struggling for a bit in the initial stages of the league, Chelsea started to make a name for themselves. Chelsea have made it to the top four in 17 out of the last 21 seasons played. This has allowed the Blues to win the league title five times.
Chelsea will finish 12th this season. This will be their worst league finish since 1993-94. After making it to the top four in the past four seasons, the players will be disappointed with their performances this season. Chelsea fans will hope that their signings prove their worth and take them back to the top next season.
2. Arsenal - 22
Arsenal have been one of the best teams in the Premier League since the inaugural season. The Gunners have registered three league titles in 31 seasons. Arsenal have taken their opponents to the wire throughout the season. They impressed under Arsene Wenger and achieved success under him. Overall, Arsenal have made it 22 times to the top four. Arsene Wenger was their manager for 22 years and he successfully led his side 20 times to the top four.
Mikel Arteta is the recent manager to take them to such heights. Arsenal could have won more league titles, but their performances towards the end of seasons have let them down. This season, despite leading for more than 200 days, Arsenal lost the Premier League title to Manchester City. But Arsenal will take positives from the current season and head into the next as contenders. They were the second-best team in the league this season and are the second-best team on this elite list.
1. Manchester United - 27
Manchester United's consistency in the top four makes them one of the best clubs in England. The Red Devils have also played every season in the top flight and won 13 league titles. Sir Alex Ferguson was the manager of the club for 21 years. Manchester United won all the league titles under him and finished in the top four every season. The Scottish manager deserves the highest credit for United's success.
Things have been a bit different since the Sir Alex Ferguson era. Manchester United have played ten seasons and made it to the top four five times. Erik ten Hag took over as the manager of the club in the summer. He has guaranteed a top-four finish, and his side is likely to finish third. The club has a huge history in the Premier League, and the Dutch manager is aware of it. He will look to achieve new things at United and maintain their lead in the list of the top four standings in the Premier League.
