The UEFA Champions League sees some of the best footballers in the world feature in it from European clubs. The premier club competition of the continent sees only the best teams from Europe’s leagues participate in it. English players have been very successful in the competition, helping their respective clubs win the trophy multiple times as well. They have left a huge mark on the history of the Champions League and continue to do so in the present.
Here is a look at the top 10 English players with the most number of goals in the UEFA Champions League:
10. Peter Crouch - 13 goals
Peter Crouch is well-known for his towering height and exceptional quality in aerial situations. The now-retired striker scored 13 goals in the UEFA Champions League, the 10th highest for an English player. He represented Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur at the competition but never won the title. Crouch retired in 2019 as a professional footballer.
9. Theo Walcott - 15 goals
Theo Walcott was once regarded as one of the most promising youngsters in English football. He featured for Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League in 59 games, registering 15 goals in the process. The winger never won the Champions League unfortunately and currently plays for Southampton in the Premier League.
8. David Beckham - 16 goals
One of England’s all-time greatest footballers, David Beckham has scored 16 goals in the UEFA Champions League. He has represented Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain in the competition. The winger is one of the few English players to feature in more than a century of Champions League matches, making 107 appearances. Beckham was part of the famous Manchester United team that won the European treble in the 1998/99 season.
7. Andy Cole - 18 goals
Another Manchester United legend, Andy Cole features at the seventh spot on the list with 18 goals in the UEFA Champions League. The striker was also part of the Manchester United squad that won the treble in 1998-99. He featured in 48 games in the competition for the Red Devils. Cole also has five Premier League trophies with Manchester United.
6. Harry Kane - 20 goals
Tottenham Hotspur and England captain Harry Kane is next on the list with 20 goals. The Englishman has featured in 24 matches in the UEFA Champions League and boast of a good scoring record. Unfortunately, due to the club’s current form, Kane is not part of the competition. He reached the final of the 2018-19 edition but came out as runners-up to Premier League rivals Liverpool.
5. Steven Gerrard - 21 goals
Steven Gerrard is regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in the history of English football. The former Liverpool captain featured in 73 UEFA Champions League games, scoring 21 goals for the Reds. He has also won the UCL title with Liverpool in 2004-05 against AC Milan in one of the most iconic finals of all-time. Gerrard also has two UEFA Super Cup and one UEFA Cup winner’s medal. He is currently working as the manager for Aston Villa.
4. Raheem Sterling - 23 goals
Raheem Sterling is the only player on the list who is also playing in the ongoing season of the UEFA Champions League. He scored his 23rd goal in the competition against Paris Saint-Germain and is currently tied with Frank Lampard. Sterling has made 66 appearances in the competition and will certainly play and score more to move up in the ladder. However, Sterling is yet to lift the trophy in his career.
3. Frank Lampard - 23 goals
Chelsea’s club-legend and former manager Frank Lampard has scored 23 goals in the UEFA Champions League. He achieved the feat in 104 matches and won the competition during the 2011-12 edition. Lampard also played for Manchester City for a brief period. He hung his boots as a professional player in 2017 and is currently out of a job following his exit from Chelsea in 2020.
2. Paul Scholes - 24 goals
Legendary Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes is the second-highest English goalscorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League. He made over 124 appearances in the competition, which is the highest for any player from England. Scholes has two Champions League titles under his belt, winning it in 1998-99 and 2007-08. He also has 11 Premier League titles with the Red Devils.
1. Wayne Rooney - 30 goals
Wayne Rooney is regarded as one of the best English footballers of all-time. He is the highest English goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League with 30 goals in 85 appearances. Rooney won the UCL title with the Red Devils in 2007-08 as well. The striker is also the highest goalscorer for Manchester United and England national football team. He is currently the manager of Derby County in the EFL Championship.
