Roberto De Zerbi’s men prevail on penalties!

For their third club friendly encounter ahead of the new season, Tottenham Hotspur locked horns with Sydney FC. This was a close clash and took place at the Allianz Stadium.

The Roberto De Zerbi-led side took the lead and were ahead by 1-0 at half-time. Their efforts in the first half were decent enough.

But Sydney FC were quick to turn the tide around at the start of the second half. They scored an equaliser. It only made things tougher for the Lillywhites.

Both of these clubs got to learn a lot about what they currently need to improve and do better on the field. Tottenham Hotspur will not be satisfied with their performance during normal time.

Important things we learned from this match:

1. Tottenham continue to struggle in defence

The Spurs took the lead in the first half. Mathys Tel came up with a brilliant free-kick in the 29th minute. Roberto De Zerbi’s men had control of the ball and ended the first half in their favour.

Their defence once again looked unorganised in the second half. They conceded an unwanted equaliser in the 55th minute.

2. Will Mathys Tel maintain quality?

The 21-year-old started on the left wing for Tottenham Hotspur. He made sure that it was the right decision to start him. In the 29th the Spurs were awarded a free-kick.

Mathys Tel made no mistake. He fired the ball at the back of the net. Tel looked like a constant threat to the opponent’s defence.

It will now be interesting to watch his performances during the Premier League 2026-27 campaign.

3. Takahiro Sekine breaks Spurs defence

It was a goal out of nowhere. Tottenham once again made errors in defence.

Takahiro Sekine who took complete advantage of the situation to level things for Sydney FC in the 55th minute. The Japanese winger received a ball by a slight deflection. He struck the ball into the far corner.

4. Sandro Tonali yet to justify his price tag

Tottenham Hotspur signed the Italian midfielder from Newcastle United for a fee of £100 million. He did play for the Spurs but was impactless.

Sandro Tonali looked a bit slow during the transition; otherwise, he could’ve helped his teammates to score another goal in the second half.

5. Tottenham survive after shootout

Tottenham Hotspur failed to secure a win against Sydney FC during normal time. This is not what Roberto De Zerbi was looking for.

Even though they managed to secure a win out there after a penalty shootout, it should have been the case in normal time if their tactics were on point. A big positive for the young stars, who gained valuable minutes. Lucá Williams-Barnett, Sandro Tonali, Andrew Robertson and Dane Scarlett scored four successful penalties to help their side secure a win.
