Transfers 2019-20: Top five big money signings who failed to perform
In the world of football, money does not guarantee success and that holds true for these big names.
Transfers 2019-20: With £80m becoming the new £50m, the footballing transfer market has seen been hit by a massive wave of inflation in recent years. Transfers of the likes of Neymar to PSG and Joao Felix to Atletico Madrid were carried out for enormous sums of money. However, not all of these transfers prove to be successful at their new clubs.
Football history is speckled with highly rated individuals, who got their big-money moves but failed to live up to their billing. Here is a list of the top five big-money signings for the 2019-2020 season, who haven’t quite shown their worth at their new clubs.

With 27 goals in the 2018-2019 season, Luka Jovic was all ready to take Karim Benzema’s mantle at Real Madrid, following his £54m transfer to the Spanish capital. As it stands, Benzema is the side’s top scorer with 16 goals, while Jovic has just a solitary goal to his name.
The Serbian’s run of poor form has seen him relegated to the bench for Zinedine Zidane's side as well as saw his place in the Serbian national team put under threat. With just eight starts and 748 minutes played all season, Jovic has a lot of work to do if he is to prove his worth to his new employers.

A few eyebrows were raised when Unai Emery’s erstwhile side, Arsenal uncharacteristically shelled out £80m to sign the Ivorian winger from Lille in the summer. Pepe had set the French top-flight alight, scoring 23 goals in all competitions.
However, Pepe has been anything but prolific for his new side, who have played under three different managers this campaign. Under Emery, the attacker often looked toothless when played, apart from a few flashes of brilliance, notably in the Europa League.

Oftentimes last summer, it seemed as though De Ligt was toying with the press. He was a boy who had the world at his feet after he captained a spirited Ajax side to the Dutch title and the semi-final of the Champions League.
After flirting with the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona, the Dutch teenager decided to move to Juventus for a fee of £67.5m. However, since his move, De Ligt has struggled for game time in Turin and rarely gets a chance to display the leadership that gained him so many plaudits while he was at Ajax.
At 19, De Ligt still has plenty of time to fulfil his immense potential. The defender will be more motivated than ever to do so.

The Portuguese wonder kid was touted as “the best since Ronaldo", while he was at Benfica. Felix's performances in the Portuguese league caught the eye of clubs all over the world. It was to the surprise of many that he chose to go to Atletico Madrid, to take up the Mantle of Antoine Griezmann, who had just completed his long-awaited transfer to Barcelona.
In his early days in Spain, Felix looked right at home, with the flicks, tricks and end product that had gotten him his £114m move.

Felix now has just four goals to his name and is having far less of an impact on games than he or indeed Atletico would have liked.

The Belgian star left Stamford Bridge at the end of the 2018-19 season after a highly successful spell at the club. He was to be the next of the great Galactico signings that Real Madrid were so famous for. It was a shoo-in for success.
Nothing is that simple in football. The 29-year-old struggled to find form in his early days at the club and was set back with an injury before he could find it again.
