PM Narendra Modi inaugurates TransStadia Arena in Gujarat's Ahmedabad, project hailed as Asia's biggest multi-purpose stadium...

Indian Prime Narendra Modi formally inaugurated TransStadia in Ahmedabad, Gujarat earlier today. The multi-purpose sports complex also hosts a 20-000 seater state-of-the-art football stadium, the first of its kind in the state. The facility's formal inauguration comes nearly eight months after it first hosted a global sports event.

Some of the facility's key features include:

  • StadiArena: air-conditioned 32,000 sq. ft. pillar-less multi-purpose indoor arena
  • T-box: modular and retractable seating systems
  • Turf Protector - world’s only turf protection system manufactured from truly translucent HDPE material, it allows for continuous photosynthesis, which ensures optimal turf health, together with a 30-year UV degradation guarante

As per reports, the Arena by TransStadia is a Rs. 550 crore project, built on a unique Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, and is hailed as India's first convertible stadium.

The venue also lays great emphasis on sustainable development through water conservation by rainwater harvesting, mist fire-fighting and zero waste water discharge with a state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant and water treatment plant. It ensures decreasing load on water resources by reusing and recycling 100 per cent of used or treated water. It provides for energy-efficient building by providing terrace gardens and energy-efficient equipment.

Complete with a temperature-controlled swimming pool and 16,000 sq. ft. body transformation centre and a training and rehabilitation centre, the facility caters for 14 sports including volleyball, basketball, squash, table tennis, tennis and amongst others.

Speaking during the inraugation the PM said, "This stadium shows how the government and private sector can work together in creating good sporting infrastructure. We must adopt a culture where sports is appreciated and supported, starting from the family."

Quizzed on how the project will assist the regeneration of the local area and impact its population Modi said, "Those familiar with the area in which this stadium is will tell you how different it looked a decade ago & how it changed for the better. Khel Mahakumbh has brought a strong shift and further encouraged a sporting culture in Gujarat."

"The determination of our sportspersons is admirable. They have pursued their passion with great diligence," he added further. 

"We must adopt a culture where sports is appreciated and supported, starting from the family," the prime minister added further.

Earlier, during his visit to The Arena Complex, the Prime Minister met former badminton legend and current national coach Pullela Gopichand, ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth, cricketer Irfan Pathan, star Indian footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, Paralympic silver-medalist Deepa Malik and other sportspersons.

Speaking on his plans for the facility particularly in the context of the current football scenario in India Udit Sethi, Founder and CEO TransStadia said, "Our aspiration is to have every sports league have a team from Ahmedabad which will have its home at our arena. That will give a great sporting calendar to the community and create a vibrant environment. If Gujarat get an ISL / I-league team – we will be happy to invite them to our venue."
