If VAR is present in all competitions, why isn't it there in Euro qualifiers?- Cristiano Ronaldo on denied penalty

Selecção das Quinas got off to a slow start by drawing at home in the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Ukraine and Serbia.

Cristiano Ronaldo featured for Portugal nearly after eight months in this international break, playing two games against Euro 2020 qualification rivals Ukraine and Serbia. While the first game was a goalless draw but in the second game, Ronaldo was substituted out near the half-hour mark due to an injury on Monday.

In the game against Serbia, the Portuguese national team thought that they should have been awarded a penalty in the second half after defender Antonio Rukavina had handled in the area.

But soon after, referee Szymon Marciniak changed his decision after consulting the assistant referee. And now Ronaldo has questioned UEFA's decision to not to have VAR in place for the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

It is now just two points out of two games for the defending European Champions. They have started slow and the denied penalty might hurt them more in future.

"If you have VAR to all competitions, why not for a European qualifier? It's strange," said Cristiano Ronaldo - who went out injured at the 31st minutes.

"We weren't favoured today, that was a clear penalty and the referee should have given it, not take the decision of another one who was 40 meters away and didn't even see the play," told the European champion to Goal after the game.

Despite not having a desirable start of the campaign, the Juventus star remained positive.

"Honestly, I think the team played well," he said. "We had many chances of scoring, we couldn't make it."

"It's a pity, obviously to draw two matches at home but I take the good side of things and I think today the team played better than against Ukraine," he said.

He added, "We created more opportunities to score, did everything to win, couldn't make it. We had the penalty, which was more than clear, and the referee didn't give it or didn't see it, but overall the team was fine."

As per reports, the injury to Ronaldo will surely lead to his absence for 10 to 15 days. If the days of his recovery are extended, Juventus would get into a serious problem as they have the two legs of the UEFA Champions League Quarter-Finals due until 16th April 2019.
