The co-host nation progress to the next round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The USA advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0, the men’s team’s second-ever victory in the World Cup knockout phase. However, a contentious red card will leave the national team without one of its key players for the next match.

Folarin Balogun opened the scoring in the 45th minute, giving the United States a 1-0 halftime lead. Malik Tillman scored a second goal for the United States in the 82nd minute — a brilliantly executed free kick from just beyond the penalty area.

Folarin Balogun became the fifth US player to earn a red card in World Cup history. He was sent off in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute after a video review (VAR) revealed that he had stepped on Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle. Balogun joins an elite, sad group of Americans who have been sent off during the competition. Eric Wynalda vs Czechoslovakia (1990), Fernando Clavijo vs Brazil (1994), Eddie Pope vs Italy (2006), and Pablo Mastroeni vs Italy (2006).

Balogun cemented his place in American football history. In a thrilling Group D opener against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, he scored twice to help the USMNT win 4-1. Then he added his third goal against Bosnia in the round of 32.
