Belgium are yet to lose in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Belgium, who suffered a disappointing group-stage exit at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, have already reached the Round of 16 this time around and will be aiming to book their place in the quarterfinals and continue their journey even further. Standing in their way are tournament co-hosts the United States, who have enjoyed an impressive campaign under Mauricio Pochettino.

The Round of 16 clash between the two sides is scheduled for July 6 at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington, United States. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face either Portugal or Spain.

Strong performances were expected from the United States under Mauricio Pochettino, but they have arguably exceeded expectations with the level of football they have produced. The hosts finished top of their group with two victories and one defeat before comfortably defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the Round of 32 to secure their place in the last 16.

Belgium, meanwhile, struggled for consistency during the group stage but still managed to top their group with five points, edging Egypt on goal difference. Their Round of 32 clash against Senegal has undoubtedly been one of the matches of the tournament so far. Trailing 2-0 until the 85th minute, the Red Devils produced a remarkable comeback by scoring twice in the space of three minutes to force extra time before netting a dramatic 125th-minute penalty to avoid a shootout and seal qualification.

With both sides possessing plenty of quality, the contest is expected to be a closely fought affair. Here are five key individual battles that could shape the outcome of the match in Seattle.

5. Sergino Dest vs Leandro Trossard

Sergino Dest has been a true utility player for the United States throughout the tournament. The former Barcelona full-back has operated as a right winger in possession before dropping into a wing-back role when the team defends. His athleticism, overlapping runs, and crossing ability have made him a constant attacking outlet.

However, Dest has shown defensive vulnerabilities, particularly against wingers who excel in one-on-one situations and like to drift into central areas. That is where Leandro Trossard could hold the advantage.

The Arsenal forward is renowned for his intelligent movement, intricate link-up play, and ability to ghost into dangerous central and far-post positions. Having registered four goal contributions across Belgium’s last two matches, Trossard is undoubtedly one of their biggest attacking threats, and Mauricio Pochettino may consider doubling up on him defensively.

4. Ricardo Pepi vs Arthur Theate

With Folarin Balogun suspended following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ricardo Pepi is expected to lead the line for the United States in this crucial knockout fixture. Pepi is a classic penalty-box striker whose intelligent movement allows him to find space between center-backs and consistently arrive in goalscoring positions at the right moment.

He comes up against Arthur Theate, a defender known for his aggressive, physical approach and proactive defending. Theate is often willing to step out of the defensive line to win possession, but that aggression can sometimes leave space behind him. Pepi’s ability to hold up the ball and link play with supporting midfielders and wingers could prove effective in exploiting those spaces if Theate overcommits.

3. Tyler Adams vs. Youri Tielemans

Belgium captain Youri Tielemans delivered one of the finest performances of his international career against Senegal. When his team needed him most, he produced an 89th-minute equalizer before calmly converting the dramatic 125th-minute winner.

Operating as Belgium’s midfield orchestrator, Tielemans dictates the tempo with his outstanding passing range and composure under pressure. His late runs into the edge of the penalty area also make him a consistent goalscoring threat.

Standing opposite to him will be Tyler Adams, whose relentless work rate and ability to win tackles and interceptions have made him the heartbeat of the American midfield. Adams’ ability to disrupt Belgium’s rhythm could be a key factor in determining the outcome of this contest.

2. Chris Richards vs Romelu Lukaku

Although Rudi Garcia opted to use Charles De Ketelaere as a false nine during the opening stages against Senegal, Belgium looked significantly more dangerous after Romelu Lukaku entered the attack. Lukaku scored the goal that sparked Belgium’s dramatic comeback and once again demonstrated why he remains one of the nation’s most reliable goal scorers.

A traditional centre-forward, Lukaku uses his physical strength, aerial dominance, and intelligent movement inside the penalty area to trouble defenders. His ability to convert difficult chances could prove decisive in another high-pressure knockout encounter.

He is expected to face Chris Richards, a centre-back admired for his aerial ability and strong ground tackling. Richards is also versatile enough to operate across the defensive line. However, he has occasionally shown lapses in positional awareness, something he simply cannot afford against a striker of Lukaku’s calibre.

1. Christian Pulisic vs Timothy Castagne

Captain America, Christian Pulisic, is yet to consistently deliver in the final third during this World Cup, and the Round of 16 presents the perfect opportunity for him to make his mark. The American forward is an explosive inverted winger whose pace, agility, and dribbling ability allow him to glide past defenders in wide areas before cutting inside into dangerous positions.

He is expected to go head-to-head with Timothy Castagne, a right-back renowned for his positional discipline and ability to defend the back post against inverted wingers. Castagne also provides Belgium with an additional attacking outlet through his overlapping runs and accurate deliveries from wide areas.

However, if Pulisic is afforded space to attack in transition, Castagne could find himself exposed, with the Belgian defender lacking the pace to consistently match the American winger.
