Mostafa Shobeir saved Lionel Messi’s penalty early in tonight’s match.

Argentina took on Egypt in an exciting Round of 16 clash in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 7. The Pharaohs took an early lead after a goal from Yasser Ibrahim, and Lionel Messi had an opportunity to level the scores from the spot. However, goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made a brilliant save to deny the Argentine legend.

Ibrahim headed the African giants ahead in the 15th minute, converting Marwan Ateya’s cross into the box. Haissem Hassan then fouled Nicolas Tagliafico in the box, resulting in the referee awarding the Albiceleste a penalty.

Lionel Messi stepped up to take the spot-kick, but the number 10’s weak penalty was saved brilliantly by Shobeir, who guessed the correct way.

The goalkeeper then made another brilliant reflex save to deny Alexis Mac Allister’s header just before the half-hour mark to protect the Pharaohs’ lead. The goalkeeper made another brilliant save in the 39th minute to deny Julian Alvarez’s close-range effort.
