In preparation for La Celeste’s forthcoming three-match friendly trip to Asia, Diego Forlan has formally started his role as Uruguay’s interim head coach. But without star midfielder Federico Valverde, the renowned former striker, turned manager, will have his first test.
After suffering a serious ankle injury during the derby against Atletico Madrid, the Real Madrid midfielder was unable to join his national squad.
Long-distance travel may exacerbate the oedema, according to Forlan; therefore, Valverde must stay in Spain for treatment.

Speaking about the scenario, Forlan disclosed that medical personnel kept an eye on Valverde’s health to the very end before opting not to take any risks. The 47-year-old manager stressed that the player’s long-term health must be prioritised before their immediate availability.
Emiliano Martinez, a midfielder for Palmeiras, was called up by Forlan as a direct replacement to cover the opening in central midfield.
“The doctor spoke with Fede, and obviously he’s feeling some discomfort,” Forlan explained. “We understand the circumstances and have to understand that the injury could swell, especially with the travel.”
In order to regain momentum after a dismal FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, Forlan has assembled a mix of young talent and seasoned players, with Martinez travelling directly to join the team. Facundo Bernal, Juan Rodriguez, and Thiago Cardozo—all uncapped players—were included for the first time.
Senior leaders like Nahitan Nandez, Lucas Torreira, and FC Barcelona defender (now on loan at Liverpool) Ronald Araujo are also returning to the team.
Throughout the forthcoming games, Forlan hopes to assess team performance and foster more tactical discipline.
