Messi’s No. 10 jersey has been up for grabs!

Argentina will begin their post-Lionel Messi era during the November 2026 international break. La Albiceleste will face Uruguay at the Estadio Alberto José Armando (La Bombonera) in Buenos Aires on November 13 before facing Costa Rica at the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes in Córdoba on November 17.

Ahead of the two friendlies, attention has turned to the iconic No. 10 jersey, which Lionel Messi wore from 2009 until his international retirement. The Inter Miami forward played his farewell match against Benin.

As a result, the No. 10 jersey – previously worn by legends such as Mario Kempes, Diego Maradona, and Messi – is up for grabs, with several players reportedly in the running. However, head coach Lionel Scaloni has revealed which player will wear the iconic jersey for the upcoming friendlies in November.

According to multiple media reports, Scaloni has decided that the No. 10 jersey will remain vacant and will not be worn by any player during the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Costa Rica.

While FIFA regulations require teams to assign numbers from 1 to 23 during official tournaments, these requirements do not apply in the same way to international friendlies, allowing Argentina to leave the No. 10 jersey vacant.

Media reports suggest that Scaloni could decide which player will wear the No. 10 jersey when Argentina resume their South American FIFA World Cup 2030 qualifying campaign in 2027.

Scaloni had previously indicated that the coaching staff would decide the future of the iconic jersey after Messi’s farewell match.

“We’ll wait until Leo’s match (against Benin) and then see what happens. The idea is for one player to make it (No. 10 jersey) their own.”

For now, Como midfielder Nico Paz remains the frontrunner to inherit the No. 10 jersey. Other players tipped to claim that number include Real Madrid youngster Franco Mastantuono, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez.
