Lionel Messi will bring his international career to an end in Argentina’s friendly against Benin at the Estadio Más Monumental in Buenos Aires on Tuesday night. The match will mark Messi’s 208th and final cap for his country, having enjoyed unprecedented success with La Albiceleste.

It will be a historic clash for the South American nation’s fans, who will hope that their skipper can bow out on a high. The Inter Miami forward was in inspiring form at the FIFA World Cup 2026, helping his nation reach the final.

So far, he has scored 125 goals for his country, and will hope to add to that tally against Benin, who are ranked 89th in the FIFA rankings. The African side are relatively inexperienced in playing against teams from outside the continent and will be the heavy underdogs against La Albiceleste.

Lionel Messi to don special farewell kit

Playing in his final international match, Messi will wear a special commemorative jersey, specially designed by Adidas for this occasion. The jersey features several visual designs that pay homage to Messi’s journey with the Argentine team.

The traditional sky-blue-and-white jersey is enhanced with gold detailing to make it stand out. Gold detailing is present on the back of the jersey, around the player’s name and number, as well as on the Argentina crest at the front.

Messi’s name and the iconic No. 10 are also written in gold. The No. 10 also features a design resembling goat horns, referring to the ‘GOAT’ acronym – greatest of all time – which is used to refer to Messi.

Messi’s personal signature logo replaces the Adidas performance logo on the front of the jersey. The Sun of May, which is featured in the Argentine flag, has been incorporated across the front and back of the shirt.
