Explained: Why Como have banned headers for academy players under 12?

Como has passed a surprising rule for their academy players.

Como have declared that they will restrict headers in their youth academy until players are ready, following Raphael Varane’s advice to ‘protect our kids and take head hits seriously.’

The Serie A club are among the first to take such bold precautions to decrease the hazards of unnecessary head hits.

They also argue that it will be replaced by promoting greater long-term technological growth, with an emphasis on time on the ball and decision-making.

Como’s new rule for academy players

When the players feel comfortable, they will progressively learn the abilities of heading the ball, as well as other tactics. Varane, an ex- Manchester United and Real Madrid defender, is a member of the Como Board of Education.

Headers are prohibited for players under the age of 11; therefore, corners are treated as throw-ins on the floor.

Starting at the Under 12 level, youngsters can add headers with a light rubber ball once a month, with a limit of five headers each session.

Coaches will reduce’repetitive and needless heading exposure’ for all ages at the Como academy, as well as overinflated balls.

Although the ball is clearly less heavy and dangerous than in the past, there is still a lack of medical studies on the long-term repercussions of frequently heading the game.
