Dani Carvajal’s planned return to LaLiga has been thrown into full chaos after a transfer to Getafe fell through at the last hurdle. The veteran defender is still without a club after leaving Real Madrid at the expiry of his contract this summer.
Getafe’s president said on Wednesday that the club’s projected acquisition of former Real Madrid defender had been called off.
Carvajal‘s chances of returning to Spanish top-flight play have taken a serious hit. Despite widespread rumours tying the renowned right-back to a transfer to Getafe, the club’s president, Ángel Torres, has issued a definitive statement, indicating that any prospective deal for the 34-year-old is now off the table.
“We’re working on it,” Getafe president Ángel Torres earlier stated to DAZN. “He passed his medical and everything. All that is left is for LaLiga and I to achieve an agreement.”

When asked about Carvajal’s anticipated arrival on Wednesday, Torres responded, “There’s nothing; (the agreement) has broken down”.
Getafe are headquartered in the Madrid area and are currently sitting in 11th place in LaLiga. Carvajal, a Real Madrid academy product, won 27 trophies over his 13 seasons at the Bernabeu, including a joint-record six Champions League titles.
In recent seasons, the Spaniard has suffered from various injuries. He sustained a cruciate ligament injury in October 2024, followed a year later by another catastrophic knee injury, limiting him to just 23 appearances for Los Blancos last season.
He made his final official appearance for Real Madrid on May 23, 2026. He started that game for the Spanish giants, who defeated Athletic Club 4-2.
