Chelsea travelled to Anfield to take on Liverpool in a fourth-round clash in the Carabao Cup 2026-27 on Wednesday night. The Blues are coming off a disappointing 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League and will need to be at their best to get the better of an in-form Reds side.
However, the Blues will be without one of their best players against Liverpool. Head coach Xabi Alonso had earlier confirmed that Joao Pedro would miss the cup clash due to an injury.
The Brazilian sat out the defeat to Spurs and was not in the matchday squad against Liverpool. He is also likely to be missing from the next Premier League clash against Manchester United.

Joao Pedro suffered a thigh injury during training on Friday, ruling him out of the match against Tottenham. The extent of the injury has now been established after further medical examinations.
Alonso confirmed that the player will not be fit enough to play against Liverpool, but the Spanish head coach refused to provide a precise return date for the Brazilian striker.
“He has an injury on his thigh. He’s going to be a few weeks out,” Alonso said. “Let’s see how many; we don’t want to predict that. But he will not be ready for the next games.”
“He is a key player. We will miss him, but we will have to be ready to deal with the injury and to be competitive and to try to win games with the players that we have available,” he continued.
“We are starting tomorrow against Liverpool, a cup game. This is the situation. We are ready to fight for it and ready to prove that we can show the level.”
Pedro has been a key player for the Blues. The former Brighton forward has scored five goals and provided three assists in seven appearances across all competitions. In his absence, Alonso will need to turn to Danny Welbeck or Emmanuel Emegha to start up front.
