Why did Kobbie Mainoo & Luke Shaw miss Atletico Madrid vs Manchester United UEFA Champions League 2026-27?

The pair were not part of the United matchday squad tonight.

Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw were two of the biggest names missing from Manchester United’s teamsheet during their second-round league phase clash in the UEFA Champions League 2026-27 at Estadio Metropolitano on Tuesday night.

United head coach Michael Carrick was handed fresh injury setbacks ahead of the crucial continental clash against Los Rojiblancos. The visitors were without six senior players, including Mainoo and Shaw.

In their absence, Carrick was forced to shuffle his depleted squad. Diogo Dalot was shifted to the left-back position, while Leny Yoro kept his place at right-back after impressing against Tottenham Hotspur. In midfield, Carlos Baleba made his first United start alongside Youri Tielemans.

Why were Kobbie Mainoo & Luke Shaw absent?

Both Mainoo and Shaw suffered injury setbacks during the Premier League match against Spurs. Shaw, who started at left-back, was forced off deep into second-half stoppage time in the 95th minute with an unspecified injury.

Mainoo, meanwhile, played the entire match. However, the England international midfielder also suffered an unspecified knock and did not feature in yesterday’s training, along with Shaw. Both players were subsequently ruled out of tonight’s clash.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, entered tonight’s match without any significant injury issues. As a result, Diego Simeone fielded a mostly unchanged starting XI, looking for all three points in their home stadium.
