The FIFA World Cup 2026 final will take place at MetLife Stadium on Sunday night.

Spain are set to take on defending champions Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on July 19. The showpiece event will be a feisty fixture, with the European champions taking on the South American champions, the latter attempting to become only the third team to successfully defend a World Cup title.

Ahead of the match, MetLife Stadium is under the spotlight, with the giant multi-purpose stadium selected as the host of the final.

It has been far from a controversy-free choice by FIFA, with the chosen stadium – renamed the New York New Jersey Stadium for the duration of the World Cup – coming under criticism from players and fans.

Star players like Brazil’s Vinicius Jr and France’s Adrien Rabiot criticised the newly installed natural grass surface, with the latter terming it “quite hard and quite rigid”. Les Bleus head coach Didier Deschamps was also critical of the playing surface.

Fans, meanwhile, have had to deal with traffic congestion when accessing the stadium, which is extremely difficult to reach without a personal vehicle. The high-priced trains remain the easiest way to reach the venue.

As a result, FIFA’s host choice has been a source of confusion. However, a report by The Athletic revealed how long-running lobbying efforts, as well as financial incentives, finally swung the decision in favour of MetLife Stadium.

The Athletic’s report claimed that the global football governing body had already decided that the final of the expanded 48-team World Cup in North America would take place in the United States. This ruled out Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, possibly the most iconic sports venue on the continent.

The Azteca has a larger capacity than MetLife Stadium, which is the second-largest stadium used in the tournament, with a capacity of 82,500. However, the joint 2026 bid stipulated that 75% of the matches would be played in the USA, with the remaining 25% being shared by Canada and Mexico.

Arlington’s AT&T Stadium and Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium were reportedly considered as the final host. However, both venues have roofs and climate-controlled environments. The governing body was concerned that this would make it tough to maintain a high-quality natural playing surface throughout the tournament.

There were financial incentives as well. The Spain vs Argentina match will kick off at 3:00 PM local time on Sunday. This was perfectly suited to broadcasters across Europe, North America, and South America, although Asia will still have a post-midnight kickoff.

Then, of course, there were years of heavy lobbying involved. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy began cosying up to FIFA in 2018. Murphy is the founding owner of the NWSL club Gotham FC and part of the failed bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and was key in the charm offensive for MetLife Stadium.

He roped in Hollywood legend Robert De Niro, a New Yorker himself, to narrate an emotional presentation video shown to FIFA delegates.

A survey commissioned in 2023 showed that fans in the United States preferred attending World Cup matches in the New York-New Jersey region over any other host location. Officials also provided weather analysis, VVIP arrangements, and security and transport planning.

The Athletic reported that the final decision to choose MetLife Stadium was made by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, in consultation with CEO Heimo Schirgi and Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom.
