Why was Mexico vs England delayed? FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match
The game has been shifted to a different time.
England’s World Cup last-16 match against Mexico has been postponed by one hour due to inclement weather. It is now scheduled to begin at 6:30 am IST (02:00 BST) on Monday (Sunday, 19:00 local time).
The thunderstorm started three hours before the game began at the Estadio Azteca. Although there was still time before the match began, hundreds of supporters had already entered the site and were required to comply with Civil Protection and FIFA regulations at all times.
At the time the process was launched, it was possible that weather conditions might cause a delay since they posed a risk to players, fans, and stadium officials.
During the day, there was severe rain in Mexico City, as well as reports of lightning over the Azteca Stadium, where the match was going to be played.

FIFA states that the game timing of Mexico vs England has been shifted
Play cannot commence until 30 minutes after lightning was last spotted within an eight-mile radius of the stadium.
FIFA said in a statement: “The safety and security of all individuals is Fifa’s priority.”
Recently, Mexico’s last game in the Azteca, against Ecuador on Tuesday, was postponed by an hour due to severe lightning activity in the area. The tournament safety guidelines were developed in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The champion of the match will face Norway in the quarterfinals on Saturday, following their 2-1 victory against Brazil.
Fans will now have to wait an hour for the game to begin. The timing has been pushed forward, with a lot of anticipation building up ahead of the event fixture.
