Spain face Austria in the Round of 32.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is almost halfway done with its Round of 32 fixtures, with the knockout round producing unprecedented results. Spain face off against Austria in a highly exciting clash at the Los Angeles Stadium, with the Round of 16 spot up for grabs.
This was the second World Cup meeting between the two sides, with the previous encounter coming in the 1978 World Cup, when Austria defeated Spain 2-1 in the group stages, subsequently finishing at the top of the table while Spain were ultimately eliminated in the group stages.
Why is Nico Williams benched?
Nico Williams was named on the bench for the important clash against Austria, leaving fans baffled. Manager Luis de la Fuente justified the decision, confirming that the explosive winger was basically ruled out after sustaining a right adductor muscle injury during Spain’s gruelling final group match against Uruguay.
“Nico was very upset. After a whole year, he thought he was injured again. Fortunately, that’s not the case, it’s just a minor issue. Thank God, he is experiencing some mild discomfort. It prevents him from playing tomorrow, but we are very optimistic; looking ahead to the next match—provided we manage to advance—he would be available.”
Nico Williams entered the tournament as one of the most crucial players for the reigning European champions, after incredible performances for the nation in recent years. His electric pace and technical ability on the left flank had proven completely unstoppable, terrorizing opposition full-backs with ease.
He had impressive stints from the bench, leading the attack with quick wing play with his lethal dribbling, creating constant overloads in the final third and providing crucial attacking returns to secure La Roja’s progression as Group H table leaders without conceding a single goal.
“Today is one of the worst days of my life. I am injured again after a very difficult year.” – Nico Williams in his social media.
However, the Spanish medical team heavily prioritised long-term recovery over risking the player, keeping him on the bench, and giving him limited minutes if needed. Luis de la Fuente chose to reshape his tactical system without his star forward, with the team forced to make changes after multiple injury concerns in attack.
