Senegal and Belgium set for first-ever competitive meeting.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is currently underway with its high-stakes Round of 32 knockout fixtures, with each matchup producing unprecedented moments, adding to the overall excitement. In one of the highly anticipated clashes, Senegal are set for a high-stakes encounter against Belgium in a heavyweight encounter at Seattle Stadium in Washington, USA.

Despite their rich footballing histories, Senegal and Belgium have never faced off against each other and are set to feature in their first-ever World Cup meeting. Both nations managed to successfully navigate a gruelling group stage campaign, confirming their qualification to the Round of 32, with the battle now set for a place in the Round of 16.

Why was Nicolas Jackson and Kalidou Koulibaly Benched Against Belgium

In a highly unexpected move, Nicolas Jackson and Kalidou Koulibaly were named as substitutes for their fixture against Belgium, despite being fully available. The decision was a result of a tactical overhaul following Senegal’s lacklustre start to the tournament, looking to maintain team momentum after a heavily rotated lineup found immense success.

Nicolas Jackson and Kalidou Koulibaly were both confirmed starters during Senegal’s initial World Cup group stage campaign, attributed to their experience representing the nation. However, after suffering back-to-back defeats against France and Norway, manager Pape Thiaw decided to make massive changes to the playing squad.

Nicolas Jackson had lost his starting role ahead of the final group match against Iraq due to a lack of clinical edge in front of goal, with Thiaw opting for a completely new frontline. The player failed to score any goals in their opening two fixtures, prompting the manager to make crucial adjustments.

He benched Jackson for the decisive fixture, with the decision paying off brilliantly, as Senegal secured a dominant 5-0 victory to confirm their spot as one of the best third-placed nations. This has enabled Pape Thiaw to play the same three-man frontline.

Meanwhile, the veteran defender and the official team captain, Kalidou Koulibaly, was benched for a similar purpose. He started in their opening two fixtures; however, his outings were abysmal, with Senegal conceding a disappointing six goals.

This led to Pape Thiaw moving on from his captain to prefer younger central defensive combinations to manage Belgium’s rapid attacking transitions. The new pairing was used in the must-win group stage match, as it worked incredibly, with Senegal securing a clean sheet.

Though both players are not starting, they are expected to feature in the game as substitutes according to the game situation, with the nation targeting their third Round of 16 appearance.
