Why has Pascal Struijk's red card against Sunderland been overturned?
Pascal Struijk received a red card against Sunderland.
The contentious red card that Brighton defender Pascal Struijk received against Sunderland following a video assistant referee (VAR) intervention has been reversed.
After 57 minutes of Saturday’s game at the Stadium of Light, Struijk was sent off. It was determined that he had fouled Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor when he attempted to rush on to a through-ball.
At first, neither referee Thomas Bramall nor his assistant called a foul. Then VAR Neil Davies stepped in and summoned the on-field official to the screen.
Bramall gave Struijk a straight red card for denying Wilson a clear opportunity to score after studying the footage many times.
The Brighton players were shocked by the ruling. But it has since been overturned due to a successful wrongful dismissal petition.

“An independent Regulatory Commission has upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal in relation to Pascal Struijk and moved his one-match suspension,” a statement said.
“The Brighton & Hove Albion defender was sent off during the Premier League fixture against Sunderland on Saturday 10 October for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.”
Earlier, the Premier League’s statement on the dismissal was:
“After VAR review, the referee issued a red card to Struijk for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO).
“REF: ‘After review, there is a foul by Brighton No.4, which denies Sunderland a goal-scoring opportunity. The final decision is a red card and a direct free-kick.'”
Due to the appeal’s ruling, Struijk will not be subject to a one-match suspension. He can now play in this weekend’s Premier League encounter against Crystal Palace.
Struijk had made his second Premier League start for Brighton after moving from Leeds United for £20 million in the summer. Brighton won the game 2-0 in spite of the red card, continuing their impressive start to the season.
