Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute of the Manchester Derby.
In the season’s first big match for both Manchester clubs, City and United faced off at Old Trafford on September 13. Manchester City were unbeaten coming into the game. Meanwhile, Manchester United had won both of their previous two Premier League games after suffering a defeat to Hull City in the opening match week.
Michael Carrick made one change from the side that drew 2-2 with Everton in the previous Premier League game, bringing Patrick Dorgu into the starting XI in place of Luke Shaw. Shaw was ruled out of the game with an injury. Enzo Maresca, on the other hand, made two changes to the side that edged past Coventry in the previous game, bringing in Matheus Nunes and Phil Foden in place of Khusanov and Ndiaye respectively.
The match kicked off with both sides going toe-to-toe in an end-to-end game; the Manchester United defence of Harry Maguire and Lisandro MartĂnez did their best to keep Erling Haaland quiet and limit the chances inside the box.
The Red Devils had their chances as well on the counter at the other end of the pitch, with Marcus Rashford looking the most dangerous. However, most of the chances lacked quality in the final ball and ended up going in vain.

While both sides contested and looked for an opener in the opening stages, the turning point came in the 23rd minute. Manchester City’s academy boy Phil Foden was sent off for a rash reaction to Bruno Fernandes’ attempt to get the City winger involved.
Bruno Fernandes and Phil Foden were involved in a ground duel, with the latter holding onto the ball near the touchline. While Fernandes tried to nudge Foden and push him to the ground, Foden’s reaction to the challenge was what earned him the red card. He left his foot out and kicked the Manchester United captain in the stomach, at least according to Bruno’s claim.
Referee Michael Oliver immediately picked out the red card from his pocket to punish Phil Foden, sending the Manchester City winger back to the dressing room. While conversations erupted between both sets of players over whether Bruno’s antics were an overreaction, VAR agreed with the referee’s decision. Foden had no other choice but to leave the pitch.
City’s attacking presence significantly reduced following the numerical disadvantage, with Manchester City failing to register an attempt on target since then. The first half ended 0-0, with Marcus Rashford coming close to scoring with a free kick that deflected off the crossbar.
Manchester City will have to endure another 45 minutes of football in the deafening Old Trafford atmosphere while playing with a numerical disadvantage. They want to keep their unbeaten run going.
