Belgium are set to face Senegal in their first knockout clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Seattle Stadium in Washington.

Romelu Lukaku has been one of the most reliable attackers for Belgium over the years. The former Chelsea and Manchester United attacker’s longevity has been commendable, and he is a part of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, too.

However, Lukaku’s current fitness level has failed to meet the standards of the De Rode Duivels. In Belgium’s tournament opener against Egypt, the 33-year-old came off the bench. In the second game, he was named in the starting line-up for the Belgian side; however, he was later substituted.

Against New Zealand in De Rode Duivels’ last group stage game last week, the 33-year-old scored a goal and provided one assist in less than 10 minutes after coming on. Romelu Lukaku played a crucial role in helping the side secure a dominant 5-1 victory over the All Whites in a do-or-die clash.

However, ahead of De Rode Duivels’ round of 32 clash against Senegal, the Belgian attacker has again fallen back in the pecking order for Rudi Garcia. Regarding the 33-year-old’s fitness situation, Garcia revealed last week that he could not play the full 90 minutes of a game.

Garcia stated that if Lukaku had started, he would have been substituted at some point in the game. Or he could come on the ground as a substitute to maximise the effort he might have in the game. Despite the issue, he remains a key figure for the Red Devils. The French tactician revealed:

“The answer is quite clear regarding Romelu Lukaku. He doesn’t have 90 minutes in his legs. So if he starts, he’ll need to come off. He can help us by coming off the bench.” 

In Romelu Lukaku’s absence from the offence, Charles De Ketelaere takes the crucial role of leading the side’s attack up front. The Atalanta forward is six feet and three inches tall, and thanks to his height, he fills Lukaku’s boots as a target man for the Red Devils. However, the 33-year-old’s experience remains unmatched.
